This book was made for young kids with anxiety issues or conditions like ASD to help them understand the Coronavirus

"On Friday evening (21/3/20) Visual Artist Jade Amalos approached Kate McCulley-Watson to write a short social story for her seven-year-old daughter Sienna, who, like a whole generation of children, was experiencing a lot of fear and anxiety due to the Corona/Covid-19 Virus.

Once finished, they felt that this document may benefit a wider range of children experiencing similar feelings to Sienna. Jade provided superb illustrations to speak to the anxious child in a way that words often cannot. As an Early Education Teacher, Kate knows that visual is often the best medium to communicate to an anxious child (or adult) in times of high stress.

Both Jade and Kate wished to provide a document that could empower children with the practical strategies that they need to be able to regulate their emotions both during this current crisis and into the future.

48 hours after their first conversation, they bring to you this digital book “Don’t Walk your Cat and other advice for a worried kid” that we hope can be an important conversation starter in your household at this historic onset of home isolation and most importantly, provide practical, achievable and sometimes humorous strategies to help reduce anxiety for the whole family.

From their perspective houses, Jade and Kate raise a cup of tea to you- families, teachers, kindergarten and school kids. We know that “Everybody feels worried sometimes” but…

We’ve got this!

Thanks for sharing! As hard as it is on us, it's even harder on the younger generation that may not understand what is happening around them.

Sorry but why wouldn't I take my cat for a walk? I regularly take mine with a specially-designed Catspia harness.

It's a great way for cat and human to get exercise, build a better cat-human bond, mental stimulation and reducing stress for both of us. For trained cats, there's no harm involved and it's a safer way for them to explore the outdoor environment without destroying it.

And as far as I'm aware walking outside with a cat will not get you diseased with Coronavirus any differently than a dog. Walking in the park or down the street there's not many humans I'm bumping into or surfaces I'm touching comparatively to a dog. So what gives?

It also says to "avoid playing the recorder"… I think it's taking the piss.

      • yeah.. which I hate. why lie to kids, even if it's in a joke? you can re-assure kids, make positive comments in funny, amusing ways without giving dangerously wrong advice.

I want to support creators, creativity and community contribution but I can't help feel irked on this.. even if it's free, just.. yeah nah.

  • Yep, as we all know, the best thing to do is to do nothing! No walking in the park, no listening to music, even no typing with a keyboard. Dress up and starve to death! This way, we will overcome it for sure.
