Unable to Sign Out of Apple ID

Looks like I've screwed up the setup of my son's iPad.

I recently bought a new iPad for my son today in preparation for the school moving to online learning. When I tried to setup an Apple ID for him; because of his age; the instructions said I needed to set up an Apple ID for myself and then setup Family Sharing and add him as a Child account. I do not have any other Apple devices; so on the same iPad I created my own Apple ID; set up family sharing, added a new Child Account and set up Screentime.

Then I signed out of my Apple ID and logged in using the Child apple id. Everything seemed to work well and handed the iPad to him. He went to install an App which said it needed approval from the parent. But he can no longer log out of his Apple ID. It seems that setting screentime prevents Sign out on the device. The suggestions seem to all say that I need to log in using my Apple ID; but we have no other apple devices - so how do I log in using my own Apple ID on the same device?

Any ideas on what I can do in this scenario? Is there a phone number I can call to get Apple support considering Apple stores are now closed.

Thank you. I'll give them a call right now.

      • My suggestion would be trawl ebay for an el cheapo iPhone. Don't need the latest just something that will allow you to do this.

        • Looks like that might be my only option for long term usage. (Edit: Even an refurbished iPhone 6 is about $160 - that is too much for something I don't want.)

In short term; looks like I need to reset to Factory settings and just set it up with out any restrictions on Screentime.

Might be messy but you could back up the device, log into icloud.com to release the ipad, erase it and set it up as new like mentioned:-

When setting it up as new, use your Apple ID to disable your Child Apple ID's screentime before logging in again under your Child Apple ID?

    • Thats pretty much what I ended up doing.

I'm going to set up Screentime locally (not through Family Sharing) and see if that works in limiting their access.

      • You're stuck with your Child Apple ID on the ipad and can't log out from it. Reset the ipad using the steps above to release the ipad from the Child Apple ID.

  • I had a similar issue, and it took me a while to find a decent solution. This is what I did, once I'd created my own account, and my kid's linked account:
when they want to install an app, go to the app store. The key is to then click on the app's link, so that it is the ONLY app currently viewed in the app store. When your kid then "buys" the app there should be an option for something along the lines of "approve it in person", and you can approve it typing in your password without them needing to log in. But this option only shows up if you click on the app's link first so that it is the only app visible in the app store. Good luck! I found it really frustrating until I figured that out.

    • Thank you. That sounds like it could work. I'll give that a go.
