Concern re cancellation of booking made via Expedia... help

Booked holiday at NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Park via Expedia in Easter School season. Paid $700 for 2nights. But due to current Corona Virus situation we would like to cancel our plan.

When I tried to cancel from Expedia site it only returns $297 ( by deducting one night fees + taxes + booking fees etc).
I wanted to see if Expedia can provide better return in this case than just $297 but unfortunately their phone support team auto message drops mmy call when it detects the booking is after 72hrs. I understand their priority is to look at other customers which have flight and hotel booking issues in 72hrs but I was hoping to see if they can help us.

This is their general guidance:

But following is special note:
Expedia will refund hotel guests during COVID-19 outbreak regardless of existing booking policy

Any suggestions what to do?

Thanks guys 😊

  • Online chat.

    • I cannot find their direct online chat, any link?

  • I just received an email this evening regarding Coronavirus from Big4 Holiday Parks (which includes the NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Park). It asks you to contact them directly.

    • Thanks, did you also book them via Expedia?
Bcoz they messaged me to cancel it from Expedia side directly but whatever rules apply it will be from Expedia

  • Maybe just wait a little longer and they may do what Wotif has done and send you an email with the option to cancel via a link in the email. I'd been hanging off calling as they were asking you not to if it was 7+ days out from your trip - and got the email just the other day for our Easter hotel booking.

  • I wish you good luck. I had a $2500 package I was supposed to go on last week and Expedia have been hopeless. All I need is the correct documentation to give to my travel insurer but they’re making it reeeeal difficult.

  • Tourism and travel are hit the hardest now. I lost a flight to Dubai … just got a stupid voucher with so many conditions that it is worthless. I also booked a non-refundable hotel which got cancelled without fees. Lucky. Most travel insurances will also be not paying as they often exclude a pandemic.

Even the ACCC will say that you don't have a lot of rights: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

So it really depends on the goodwill of the company. Sad situation.

  • Has there been much change/update on how Expedia treats non refundable bookings or are they still as per the name? I'm tempted to book a long weekend away in a couple of months time but if the NSW Govt were to change course and ban travel >5km from home for example, then I wouldn't be able to make it… i.e. I don't want to be left paying for something I can't use and beyond my control.
