Weight Watchers Membership

Hi everyone….There are so many people who are struggling to survive and wanting to cancel their mmembership to Weight Watchers. WW have started up a virtual workshop where you weigh in at home and connect to their virtual workshop for meetings. Not only do I not have a set of scales I am not able to, nor want to use a virtual workshop. I'm wondering if anyone can help me with the legal side of this. They say in the contract that if your workshop is closed and there isn't a meeting within 10 kmm you can get a refund. But they are refusing to suspend membership other than for one month and refusing to allow anyone to cancel membership if you'd signed a contract for longer than one month. The law states "The Australian Consumer Law prohibits businesses from taking payments for goods or services when there are reasonable grounds to believe the services won’t be supplied. This applies whether or not your contract allows you to suspend payments". Is there a legal way of cancelling or at least suspending membership until they offer the workshops that we signed up for? A lot of people need the money more than ever to help support their families in hard times. Thanks for reading my post and hopefully someone is able to give advice.

    The Australian Consumer Law

If they rip you off 99.9% of the time nothing happens. But if something does happen, no one goes to jail and the business recieves a cost of doing business, or fine as they call it, and the business can get back to ripping you off. As intended.

If you rip them off you go to jail. And you must pay back everything you defrauded.

I would call Consumer Affairs in your state, there's a list on the ACCC website.

  • How are payments taken? Send an email to Weight Watchers saying you're cancelling your membership because:

They say in the contract that if your workshop is closed and there isn't a meeting within 10 km

Tell your bank to block the payment.

As for refunds… maybe later. I doubt they have the money to refund you now even if they wanted to.
