  • Eh, $20 each @ First Choice if you just want to buy by the bottle

And get $1.82 cashback per bottle = $18.18/btl, with no need to buy 12

I'd rather support an independent where possible.

Buy direct from the manufacturer then @ $25/btl…

        • That isn't $18 - given the option of almost identically priced products, I'll buy from an independent. Definitely biased though, as my family owns an independent bottleshop (where I can get this at cost if I want!)

@pdtmathieson: My point was more than in the current climate, people are less likely to buy by the dozen, especially if they've never had it. Generally per dozen prices are 10% less than per bottle, for obvious reasons. My comparison was for those who might want to try it, without buying 12. To be able to buy 1 bottle for about the same price as 12 is the real deal.

I'd prefer to support the actual wine-maker, and beyond that I couldn't give 2 shits tbh. It's a shame that the industry has let them re-sell at other stores for cheaper than the manufacturer directly. I'd hate to think how much the store pays the wine-maker, to then sell it for less than the wine-maker does.

@spackbace: Interesting second point, especially for our store which is fairly deep in the Mornington Peninsula wine region, so we deal direct with wineries a lot.

Key point to remember there is that it is how much the wine maker chooses to sell it for - they could sell it to retailers for $15 and at their cellar door for $16, no one is stopping them.

They generally know the margin in the retail industry (around 30% on wines, less for FC/DM, more for boutique independents), so they know what price stores are going to be selling it for when they set a wholesale price. For us, it generally works out that we sell it about the same as the local cellar doors, plus 12% off for six or more, which again is about the same discount at the winery.

Skye Cellars and First Choice won't be discounting this product to cost price, they will be supported to get to a cheaper price by the distributor or winery themselves - everyone has decided that they want this discount to happen.
