Is eBay Showing Disregard to Government Requests?

Since Peter Dutton warning about going hard on people trying to capitalise on the situation by stocking essentials and reselling them for profit, the stocks in supermarkets have still mostly been empty on disinfectant wipes, hand sanitisers and toilet paper rolls. However searching for disinfectant wipes on ebay returns a lot of results with people bidding 2 to 4 times the regular prices on top of high delivery charges. Is eBay simply turning a blind eye to such sale or has it found a legal way to allow such practice or is it genuinely unaware of this happening? I am interested to know what everyone is thinking on this matter.

Report a post and eBay will take it down. Auctions are exempt from that I'd guess, if people wanna bid above what it's worth they they obviously want to pay that much.

Just wondering how this directly affects the OP?

Are you concerned about scalpers or people who disobey the government?

I’m more concerned that there’s been no new eBay coupon codes lately. I need to buy some stuff, but I refuse to purchase without a code.

Ebay will use their old argument that they are merely a platform for people to buy and sell.

They don't set or enforce the prices, that's between the buyer and seller. If a buyer wants to pay ridiculous prices eBay are happy to take their fee and don't care.

They will step in only if complaints are received, but if you don't report it they ignore it.

  • disinfectant wipes, hand sanitisers are heavy that why the shipping cost is high.

You should vote by your foot not to buy from them.

They are listing items that are neither regulated nor restricted nor prohibited.

  • If the seller is sending hand sanitizer via Australia Post you could consider reporting them for breaching safety and security rules by shipping Dangerous Goods, as specified by AU Post's terms and conditions.

I asked AU Post if I could post hand sanitizer using any of their retail services. The firm answer was "no", with a Dangerous Goods brochure thrust in my direction.

As for the inflated shipping cost, that's a decades old eBay trick to minimize eBay fees on the sold items.

  • Do you actually believe he will do anything? I read the headline last week, laughed at it & scrolled down.

The government has threatened to investigate and target people that hoard these items and resell it at high prices. Investigate whatever they want, but I'm curious as to exactly what they'll charge those people with? What crime are these people committing? Yes, it's morally very wrong, but I can't think of what crime they're committing. Anyone know?

  • Ebay has never been anywhere near moral or good. Treat it as going down that dark alley in metropolis.
