Sandisk 16GB Micro SD Class 4 $48 @JB Hi-Fi

25

Hey, I just remembered reading some comment on here that this card usually goes for this price OEM from local stores or something. Well, here's where you can get it with full retail packaging if you want. Was just in a catalogue so no particular store mentioned, assuming that means it's nation wide.

Sorry for the lame pic, you can see the important stuff though.

Don't know what's up with the website, they have this at the same price, free shipping, but it's class 2. I'm getting classes only from the pics provided however, so they could be the same and some guys at JB are just slack.

Anyways, enjoy.

These have been selling for $20 without retail packaging for a long time now.

    • Oh, maybe I misread something.

      • It's the 32gb at that price I believe.

    • Yes, a shop next door sells it for $25 (class4 kingston)

There're lot of place Cost $20-$25 !!not a deal at all!

  • $24@MSY since b4 the galaxy S2 came out.

  • SanDisk 16GB Class 4 with adapter: $19.99 with free delivery.

Thanks for the effort though :)

guys, lazy to repeat this, but the old Class 2's are faster than these new batch of class 4's hence the difference in price

    • How do you quantify 'faster'? Sequential reads/writes? Read/write IOPs?

Speeds can vary even in the same product over time but at the minimum, a Class 4 card must maintain 4MB/s writes in a fragmented state: see Wikipedia.

Can you provide anything to suggest that 'new' Class 4 cards are slower than 'old' Class 2 cards?

      • It's quite a well-known thing. The old Class 2 microsdhc sandisk cards performed much better than their class 2 rating.

        e.g.
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1582172

        Card Size Class ReadMB/s WriteMB/s Purchased/Bus/User
        Sandisk 16GB 2 18.80 7.65 Q110/USB/OP
        Sandisk 16GB 4 10.37 6.04 Q410/USB/LeChuck

There is a big speed difference with purchase date on Sandisk cards, Older=Faster.

        • Very few results testing specifically the SanDisk 16GB Class 4 for random 4k R/W.

I found one which suggests the Class 4 is faster than the "old" August 2010 Class 2.

Some "old" SanDisk (not specifically 16GB) Class 2 cards had faster sequential writes, by 1-2MB/s, but their random 4k R/W speeds were abysmal.

What I can ascertain from this thread is: class ratings are not indicative of random r/w performance, only sequential writes (as that's all they are meant for)

As there are a lot of other variables we do not know about (slower card readers, completely different machines, etc) it's hard to get an accurate picture. I'm expecting my SanDisk 16GB Class 4 card (from SS) any day now and will do a CDM test and share results.

        • For easier reading:

          SanDisk 16GB Comparison

          August 2010 Class 2:
          Sequential Read : 14.178 MB/s
          Sequential Write : 3.681 MB/s
          Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 1.263 MB/s [ 308.4 IOPS]
          Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.307 MB/s [ 75.0 IOPS]

          June 2011 Class 4:
          Sequential Read : 20.856 MB/s
          Sequential Write : 6.180 MB/s
          Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 3.061 MB/s [ 747.3 IOPS]
          Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.972 MB/s [ 237.3 IOPS]

        • I think it should be mentioned that random 4k writes only matter if you're using the card to run apps or an OS.

For the majority of people, the cards will be used to store videos, photos, and music - for that, the sequential figures are what counts the most.

Agreed, I am pushing my own agenda here, as my phone will JBOD the SD card with internal NAND :). For WP7 IOPS are critical and can cause serious instability/inability to use phone.

      • double post

  • Sorry, but check price sites first, as others have pointed out this is not a good price. I got a 32GB class 4 (with 6MB/s write speeds) for not much more recently.

  • $1 more gets you a 32gb sandisk class 4 shipped from shoppingsquare. I ordered mine. Received few days later. No faults. Full 32gb read/writable, no issues there. This 16gb for 48 is not a deal

  • I just bought one of these for $19, this is a rip-off if anything.

  • Cheaper on eBay for months now. Not a bargain.
