What meals do you cook throughout the week?

I've recently moved out on my own and I'm quite curious to know what people on here do for meals.

Anyone keen to share their meal plans or ideas?

  • Live in CBD and eat out 2 meals a day everyday generally. Large choice of everything you fancy available and convenience is priority over value for money.

Recently trying to be healthier and ordered first batch of 'cook at home' meal boxes from Oodee. They're pretty good and large portions enough to last 2-3 days each. Colleague gets Mymusclechef meals delivered to work and just microwaves them in a bowl. Youfoodz is also popular although most complain quality and quantity have gone downhill recently.

If you're after self-cooking then look into meal prep recipes and advice. There's plenty here as well as /r/MealPrepSunday.

looks the same as those frozen meal … sodium overload

      • Half your RDA of sodium from a pasta and chicken main meal of the day doesn't seem too bad.

Frozen chips, nugets, calamari, fish, snitzhel, etc etc

    • snitzhel oh fancy!

I've recently moved out on my own..

Do you regret moving out on your own during this shitty lockdown? haha

I eat out all the time, but have some frozen stuff like pies in the fridge. Canned tuna and everything in the pantry for emergencies too.

When I say recently I mean in January, but yeah it has it pros and cons. It's lonely but I enjoy shitting with the door open. I was in China on a trip with my girlfriend when the outbreak started so I had to cancel my trip (gf can't return just yet). Now that it's happening in Australia it's like I'm reliving what happened in China, haha.

I'm dying of boredom and loneliness right now but, yes, this must be one of the things that every guy enjoys doing! ^_^

6 months free rent , what to regret

      • +3

        IF only….

Rent or mortgage - whatever doesn't get paid now still has to be paid later!

        • -1

          not really,
If you wanted to be an arse, you can live rent free. Just don't pay and save that money up so when you get kicked out you can easily pay for your future rent expenses

          • +1

            @cloudy:

..so when you get kicked out you can easily pay for your future rent expenses.

IF you can rent a place in future!
Your name is likely going to end up on a blacklist for w-t-f knows how long! haha

            • @bobbified: Cash is king.

If you’re gonna go rent free for 6 months you should save up enough to smack down a massive deposit for your next rental.

If your a landlord in 6 months time, and your property is empty, you’re chances of good rental are still low, and if someone smacks down a 6 months deposit that person is A grade regardless of history. And will probably get a discount on rental too.

              • @cloudy:

If you’re gonna go rent free for 6 months you should save up..

If you have money to save for 6 months, then you should be paying the rent you owe.

If your a landlord in 6 months time…

I don't know if the blacklist gives a "reason" why a particular person is on there, but there's really only two reasons to be there - either the failure to pay rent or you've caused major damage that wasn't paid for.

Now, if you're a landlord and someone who is on a blacklist offers up 6 months rent, what would you think? I would assume that they've previously caused major damage. I know that I'd rather give my place to someone who has a secure income and isn't on the blacklist or let it wait empty a little longer or even drop the rent a little.

Pasta is a pretty cheap, simple to make meal and you can also make multiple servings and leave leftovers for another day/next meal. It's also pretty easy to customise it by adding any meat or veges in it to get the nutrition you need.

only if you can find in stock ?

Maybe cook meals like you have been eating and hopefully enjoyed……

I have ice cream for dinner a few times per week. The only problem is what to have for dessert afterwards…

  • I’ve started living by myself as well.

So far I’ve done burgers, spaghetti bolognese, spaghetti with arrabbiata, I made a curry from a curry kit. Want to start doing more of those.

I eat out once a week, usually on Sunday to support the local places.

What do you like to cook?

  • +1

    Marry someone who can cook.

  • I usually make sure I have veg like broc, capsi, mush, onion, carrot and also mince, chicken thigh and bacon, some cream and some eggs. Can make most easy, tasty healthy meals with these ingredients, such as Bolognese(veg loaded), various other pasta dishes(using bacon and/or chicken), and curries, stir fries and fried rice, which are all great for dinner and/or lunch the following day/s or freezing too.

  • Buy a Breville sandwich toaster. They are definitely a bachelors friend.

Air Fryer is a bachelors Best friend

Learn some staples, e.g. spag bol, fried rice, pan-fried lamb/pork chops/salmon, teriyaki chicken, rice.

After you have learnt some staples, learn to cook what you enjoy eating when you were living at home.

As boring as it is, I probably have around 5 or 6 easy to make, large batch meals I used to make and eat through the week.

Chili con Carne - easy to make large portions, freezes well.
Thai curry - red, green, masaman, whatever.
Chicken and Chorizo jumbalaya - when chorizo goes half price
    Spanish Gypsy stew
    Big pasta dish
Zuchinni bake / lasagne / some kind of bake.

Generally I could have it for dinner that night, freeze / refrigerate 3 or 4 portions and have for a few days before moving on to the next dish.

My biggest problem when working in the CBD was eating my lunch at 10, then going out and buying another lunch at 1300. Too easy to do!

    • Thanks for the ideas.

Look into getting a pressure or slow cooker, this is great to just chuck in all chopped veges and meat and makes all kinds of things

  • If you look at something like an Instant pot, they can be used to Sauté, pressure cook, make Yoghurt, low cook etc. it also has a website with a huge number of recipes.

Personally, if I’m feeling lazy, I use the Tailors Red Thai curry set. It has the spices, red curry and coconut cream all in one packet. Not, fantastic. Calorie wise but I use chicken, carrots, capsicum, asparagus, etc and then some rice. Really tasty and a good way to add veggies to your diet.

I, also, by frozen pizzas then tart them up with additional veggies and ham.

  • Main meal is toast & work around that, eg:-
bacon & eggs ( don't forget the Vegemite on the toast - yum)
    baked beans on Vegemite toast
    poached egg on Vegemite toast
    peanut butter on toast
    strawberry jam on toast
cheese & bacon on Vegemite toast
olives, anchovies, feta cheese, on Vegemite toast
spring onions, feta cheese, tomatoes & lightly fried ham off the bone on toast
    sausage roll
beef & onion pie (you can even deep fry a pie if the fat needs to be changed as it may open if you don't keep an eye on it)
    bananas on toast
Vegemte toast with a drizzle of tomato sauce around the end & have a fried egg on top & a piece of bacon next to it with a beef or pork sausage & some raw onion to top it off (that is a brekkie to start a big day)
no breekie cerial as it is too high in sugar, I use them to make alcohol :p
baked bean jaffle (don't put Vegemite in it, it will taste crap)
get a Fray Bentos pie, they come in a tin & they puff up & they are yummy; I eat a whole one just for lunch - yum
fish fingers in toast with Worcestershire sauce
    an omelette on toast
toasted cheese sandwiches; you can sprinkle garlic powder in with the cheese if you like; you can even put in raw onions with the cheese - yum

that's enough for now, see what you can come up with to put in toast. post in here so we/us/me can try. stay safe everyone

  • I follow a few good cooking blogs. The trick for me is easy recipes with common ingredients I'd have in the pantry (nothing exotic unless it's something I really like so I cook it a lot).

I subscribe to the newsletter and everytime they share a recipe I like I save it to Evernote (or print it to a folder).
