Moving home - no wifi or mobile phone signal - help

Hi all, I’m moving home, it’s a small old 2 bedroom house with an asbestos room extension that I need to use as a home office. Unfortunately the TPG wifi won’t reach and the mobile phones drop to SOS (1 Telstra & 1 Vodafone). I’m not tech savvy but surely there has to be a solution to both of these problems. Can anyone make suggestions on how we can get wifi and mobile phone service to the room?

  • Either get a wireless ap, a mesh system, really long Ethernet, EOP

Mobile, you can buy an external antenna that sticks to a window

      Aren't these expensive/illegal?

Well, that link proves expensive if you buy from Telstra and you have to be with Telstra.

Illegal if you buy one from a 3rd party (I believe).

Edit: Or am I confusing repeaters with antennas?

          • @John Kimble: Probs Illegal as you don't have a license to operate due to the fact that you can tune the frequency, which could disrupt other services.

Hope this helps. We bought a PowerLINE adapter for a friend who has solid brick walls in his flat, so his back room had trouble with wifi.

Telstra has something like this for mobiles, I’ve not used one so can’t comment

      Second for Powerline Adaptor
was able to get connection my house to the inside of my solid brick garage

  • Thanks for the responses and information, I’m looking into the options now. Much appreciated!

  • Thought I'd pipe in with maybe getting a mobile wifi, unlocked, and add an antenna to that. I know a lot of people who caravan and that's what they do— connect it to their caravan's TV antenna. Jaycar has adapters that go from the tiny end on the mobile wifi to a standard cable size.
