Recommend Best Value 6" and 6.5" Speakers?

One of my front speakers is dead. I need to get two front component speakers that can be either 6.5 inch or 6 inch, these need to be decent, but good value because i lost my job (corona). Mid-range or better I guess.

I may get two 6 inch (non component) speakers for the back two spots, which are currently free, may as well get everything done at once. These two at the back would be a cheaper set since they are less important. So for these please recommend a budget pair.

Thanks!

    You'll get lectured soon

    • not sure how this could be a troll…?

You are worried about getting "mid range or better" speakers for your car, when you just lost your job.

        • well i have savings, can afford a couple of hundred or so on this…

If they were factory speakers, anything will be better

    But prioritise…

    • Not necessarily. Factory speakers usually have very high sensitivity, so you can get decent sound levels with little power.

Most cheaper aftermarket speakers will have a lower sensitivity, therefore they will be quieter.

I replaced my Elantra factory front speakers with a pair of Hertz components, high sensitivity, so just as loud and with better sound.

  • I bought a pair of 2.5 inch speaker for my suzuki wagon R off aliexpress for about $12. It was an improvement over the busted 20 year old speakers in there, but yeah, sounds like $12.

I got what I paid for.

See if you can replace both of them, and look up how much the original speakers cost (search any serial numbers you find on ebay). If you're not working, this isn't an essential cost.

  • Where are you driving if you don't have a job?

    • i know right, just to the shops and to see my girlfriend who does not live close.

  • Just go to your local auto/audio store and buy some. There won’t be a lot of difference between ones of similar price range. Make sure you get the right size - is it 6 or 6.5?

End of the day, unless you are spending a lot of time listening without the engine running the road and engine noise will mask any minor difference is audio quality and a car is a terrible shape for sound projection.

Rear parcel shelf speakers provide better projection than those in the front footwell.

    • well its 6 inch but 6.5 should fit and is much more common. I have rear side speakers not parcel shelf (its a coupe)

  • I have heard good things about jaycar range, but if I just lost my job I would wait until my situation improves.

  • When you go to a live music concert how good do the rear speakers sound? Yeah that's right there aren't any. Screw the rear speakers. Just buy the fronts. If you need bass, than go for sub

    • good point

    • When you go to a music concert are the speakers pointing at your face or your ankles? It’s nt a valid comparison.

      • Well in both my current car and my previous car the component tweeters, which have the most directional sound, were pointed at the head level. The mid-woofers aren't as badly directional as the higher frequency sounds.

Though I agree that cars are bad sound reproduction environment.

        • My point being that spending up on audio in a car is making marginal gains at best. Modern factory gear is half decent, aftermarket is a bit better. Unlike 30 years ago when all you got was a couple of 4” single range speakers in the front door or dash from the factory and you could get really good improvements by buying an aftermarket unit and speakers.

@Euphemistic: Maybe in a premium car with the premium sound system the upgrade may be marginal. I know some German cars and the like have nice premium Bose or equally good systems in them, with nice speaker and amp setups. But that is not most cars. Most everyday cars still run paper cone speakers made for a couple of bucks, running off the factory headunits which puts out 10-20wrms per channel AT BEST.

There is definitely much better than marginal gains to be had.

Also what some manufacturers charge for a "premium sound system" upgrade is exorbitant compared to putting in an aftermarket system in terms of value.

My old system that I had in my Commodore for example, I paid abut $2500 for it and it would blow the pants off any factory system for the same dollars.
