Refurbed Dell Optiplex 9020 Power Issues

I've got a SFF refurb Dell Optiplex 9020 off ebay on one of those typical ozB sales like acttrader. I've had it about a year and works great however recently developed an issue with starting it from a shutdown.

-If I shut it down, and try to power it back up, it will just do nothing and then start to flash orange.
-By testing the PSU with that little button on the back the indicator turns on showing that it's fine, and I can hear the machine work with power through it.
-I can intermittently get the machine on by fiddling and being lucky etc which I have done and kept it in sleep mode to avoid the issue. The machine works flawlessly, no board issues or anything seems like when I actually have it turned on so it cant be a motherboard issue surely?

Has anyone experienced something similar with these Dells and have any idea what the issue is?

  • Check the first few results from Google search for Optiplex 9020 can't shutdown orange

  • cmos battery ?

    • only thing is that it can remember the date and time of the system which i thought was the main thing with the CMOS battery

      • Have you tested that theory by removing the unit from mains power…

  • I have already replaced the PSU on mine as it died.

  • Have you installed a discrete graphics card? and flashes to latest BIOS?

I had a DT (not SFF) 9020 that was doing the same thing until I flashed the latest BIOS.

  • I think the first troubleshooting step is to reinstall and upgrade every software (BIOS/OS).
If cannot resolved, buy the barebone (PSU + Main + Case) ~ -80 to swap it out to double check. Sometimes not even worth it and it is better sale the machine for part….

I had one Dell SFF and it is always flashing the screen for no reason (even with new GPU/cable/monitor) and dont know why still. At the end, I converted that machine to a home server….
