Because doctors can't afford a car?

What about the workers manufacturing toilet paper? They are essential too…
or the workers at the gin distillery making sanitiser for everyone?

    • +11

Resident doctor salaries in Australia are $60,000 – $80,000. Admin and document controllers earn more than that.

This is nothing more than a publicity stunt but if it helps 200+ people to help others then so be it.

        • The sentiment to hospital workers is separate to job loss or stability, it is their work in dealing with the covid-cases.

A sick patient with covid-19 is being told to present to a factory

          • +4

@Yamun121: what does that have to do with hiring a car?

        • +3

And about 10x the skill requirement of a factory worker. What is your point?

      • +1

That’s only the starting salary for interns right out of university. Their salary goes up about 8% per year for experience plus 3% annually per their state agreement. They get 17% Super as well, and get crazy overtime depending on the department. Look up Queensland Health medical officer salaries L1 is an intern.

      • +1

lets not forget their massive study debt, talking to some that alone would scare me away from wanting to be a doctor.

(doctors do earn a little more on their overtime but even without covid most of them work pretty hard)

        • +2

          everyone works hard

          • +1

@abuch47: sure some people have the misconception they just sit there bossing people (maybe its a european one)

    • +13

Why don't you think before you write?

Health care workers are at high risk of exposure to Covid-19.

Many are finding ways to isolate themselves from family they live with. Some even resorting to live in a garage or tent.

Many health care workers use public transport…

Having said that I don't think this is a very practical deal. Agree it is more a publicity stunt

      • +1

@DataScientist1 calm down with the bold.

      • +1

Health care workers are at high risk of exposure to Covid-19.

        So are taxi drivers.

        • +1

Taxi drivers aren't continuously on wards of infected people making physical contact.

If this site isn't going to get rid of you then they really need to make a way to block people (or have they and I've just not noticed it?). I think you're genuinely the most annoying person I've ever seen online (though I probably shouldn't admit that as you'd take it as a badge of honour!).

    • +1

Yes from a monetary standpoint I understand what your saying JV. But as a doctor, a lot of us have to travel a lot for work to rural/remote areas, and sometimes other capital cities away from home. For Doctors in that situation that don't have a car this could be a great thing for them. (For Nurses and other health staff too!)

    • +3

they will use the car for transport not a convertible Covid-19 ward.

      • -7

Thank for negging evidence. Health workers are the most exposed to virus, for obvious reasons that any fool can get, and will bring the virus in the car if they are unlucky enough to catch it

        • +3

exposed yes but they always have the right protective equipment. Have you consider the people working at supermarket and banks are the most exposed? Given the affected numbers in Australia, less than 1% was from the health care staff. BTw, I did not negged you.

        • +2

so you'd rather them catch public transport to work than drive a rental car?

        • +3

Would you rather have them sit at home in self isolation and if you are unlucky enough to catch it, well tough luck. There's no one to take care of you. You either die which is most likely scenario or you live.

You can never make everyone happy. If medical staff were sitting at home, they'd cry how disgusting it is. If they work, oh, they will infect us.

Well, tell us, how to solve coronavirus then.

    • +1

Lol yep they better keep taking the bus and train to work.

    • +1

bahahaha, so are you going to avoid hospital if you or relative are sick?

  • +1

So they aren't using a family car I'm guessing.

  • +12

They'll probably make their money from the $1000 excess for minor scratches.

    • +1

Plus refueling the car at $2.50 per litre

  • +11

    So much doctor hate here.
When I was in Uni, I made more per hour in the ANZ call centre than I did in the first 3 years as a doctor…

    • +2

they forget health workers is not just surgeons

    • -2

      So much doctor hate here.

So much non-Health Care worker hate from corporations here…

      • +2

So much JV hate from ozbargain

        • -1

Actually, some people will probably say not enough…

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: user name checks out…

            • -1

@jv: Lol running low on content?

    • +4

Don't worry about the negs, mate. Some people here are bitter and jealous when they see a bargain that they can't grab for themselves. If these unobtainable freebies didn't exist, I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem.

    • +2

You must have been ballin that call centre. First three years (Intern, res, SRMO) I made 85, 100, 120k respectively. That's inclusive of all overtime.

      • +3

Yeah base rate at ANZ back then (we're talking 2011) was like $39 an hour. And depends on your hospital re: claiming overtime… However cultural change (HR probably getting scared by all the underpayment claims in hospitality industry) has made it much easier for residents to claim these days.

        • $39/hr for a call centre in 2011?

          • @truemana: Credit card collections… It has since gone offshore to Manila. Undesirable job with lots of abuse so got paid pretty well.

Edit: I was devastated when I had to quit when I got into med school interstate.

            • @JDogman: Yea, that's good money, one hospital in my network lets me claim OT. I'm about to start my return to service years in a rural community. Not looking forward to it.

  • +4

Ford Australia doing something similar https://www.ford.com.au/shopping/ford2ndcar/

  • It is just marketing, but it keeps a few Hertz people in a job at a time when, I imagine, car rental demand is next to zero.

    • But, they are getting it for free, so no pay for workers…

      • +1

        Are Hertz employees on commission-only?
Someone needs to do the paperwork etc., and no-one would be doing that for free.

        • You are welcome to go there and ask employees.

Renting a car is not an essential thing.

  • +2

this is very helpful to all our transient(agency/casuals) health care workers.

  • -3

    Does this apply to dermatologists?

They are one step above working at the Clinique counter.

Dermatologists. Skin doesn't need a doctor. Wash it, dry it, move on

  • +1

    This is just common sense.
I can now sell my car for cash and get a free rental car.

  • flyer shown is a rav4, but we only get small SUVs such as a Nissan Qashqai.

    • C'mon, just be grateful for the generosity!

  • +2

We may need this soon, as my partner, a CN(clinical nurse), is being asked/told to take leave as there is not enough work atm. So much for being essential.
Meanwhile I work in a (car)service centre and we are busier than ever!
    Go figure.

    • Same thing for me, I've been leaving work early or spending days in the library. That's never happened before. There's so many Doctors it's embarrassing.

    • it might hurt his pride but i'm sure he'd work in no time with an agency at the moment (or even just as pool with a hospital nearby)

      • 'She' has worked full time on her ward for over 10 years, agency staff on her ward aren't even getting shifts. It's due to preparing for covid-19 pandemic that Adelaide have so far managed to keep under control.

  • Given how the local car rental places near me a overflowing with un-rented cars
this offer does not surprise me, better to have them on the road than sitting idle in their yards doing nothing.

  • Does it apply to a nurse even she’s on maternity leave? We really need a car the moment

  • Assume she is still registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and has an id

  • Thanks OP just applied

  • $5000 excess for a scratch you will see under fluorescent light with a magnifying glass.

Charging $40 despite filling up with a full tank and driving back to the depot 2kms from the servo.

$50 charge for using one part of a toll road.

  • I get the message, but nothing is free. we all pay for company charity later on.

  • If you cough out the car window can you infect someone behind you?

    • +3

that depends… is it a close cough or far cough?

  • Thanks OP, hired a Ford Mustang GT for 2 weeks through Ford :)

    • Do you need to already own a ford?

      • Usually yes, but they opened up their car rentals to health care workers for this deal

    • Cheers!
