Best Value Weightlifting Equipment to Buy

Hi,

So I have been wanting to put on some muscles for purely aesthetic reasons for a while and I currently have more time to do it. My focus is wide shoulders, chest and arms (lol). I am a complete beginner and want something as cheap as possible but is still future proof for when I get some experience and understand different exercises more.

Could you please recommend some cheap weightlifting equipment, mainly a bench press and weights? The closest thing I can find is that Aldi set but they won’t be selling them soon.

Thanks.

Everything's sold out or heavily inflated pricing right now. Not the best time to be looking for cheap as possible gear.

    • Right, damn. Thanks for the advice. Any recommendations for when this boils over?

Barbell and some plates and a bench

You can work every upper body muscle group with that

Can also do legs if you get creative (i.e. place barbell on your back and do squats to failure)

      • Yes, when it boils over, head to a auction-house as gym equipment goes pretty cheap… ie
My friend purchased a 2 year old Technogym Full HD Recumbant bike for $850, RRP is $15 500…
At the same time, they guy from Grays Fitness was there bidding on the same products and then he resells them for 5k…

It won't go cheap now though, btw

        Exercise Bands +
Also, parallettes are still available and you can do some cool exercise variations on them for cheap.

Don't think they are only for dips or push-up variations though…

I suspect the second hand market will be flooded when gym's re-open.

For me, I have a fold up squat rack, a deadlift platform, and a flat bench. I have a power bar, and a pair of plate loadable dumbbells, and just recently got a trap bar (but it is totally unnecessary). That does me for everything I need, though I train powerlifting so you might want something better than the plate loadable dumbells for bodybuilding. They are pretty shit for most exercises if you want to load 10kg plates on, at least with my collars. Its fine for me cause I just use them for bro-ing out occasionally, but if you all your workouts are bro-workouts, then you might want something else.

All that packs up against the wall of my garage, and we can still get two cars in. Although my reverse in to the garage isn't for the feint of heart tbf.

    • Yeah it was pretty annoying. I was looking at getting a few items just before the pandemic hit. People were giving them away on Gumtree. I'm just going to wait until after it passes, then there will be lots of cheap and free items as people go back to the gyms.

Just do body weight for now to get general strength up, the post crazyness go for it

Powerbands. Cheap, easy to store and good enough until gyms re-open (assuming you plan to join a gym when they re-open?)

    • +1. I've been using bands as well to maintain strength and mass. Works quite well. I'm lucky as well as I have an adult size bunk bed so I can do pull ups on it and bands for everything else.

  • Get a total gym 1000 - look up marketplace or scumtree. Should be around $100.

  • Do push ups.

    • push ups
      burpee

      dont forget the legs
      dont be a chicken br0

      do u lift br0
      ur legs br0 urs legs

  • you want good shoulders, do push up with proper form. do 100 a day. not all at once. maybe 20 x 5. then do pushup variants. there are some really hard variations.

    pullups are also also good.

with any exercise, the important thing is to have correct form.

these are the easiest to work on without weight.

if this routine is still too hard to stick to, forget it, weights aint gonna help

    • Agreed. Proper form w/ pushups and using variations like diamond pushups, archer pushups (and eventually) one-arm pushups are an easy way to beat time in your home gym.

The Recommended Routine from Reddit's /r/bodyweight is the perfect way to start if you have none to limited equipment as the program builds resistance through either duration of the lifts or through variation (eg. squats, one-legged squats, pistol squats, etc.). I would suggest looking into it prior to purchasing equipment or if you've never been weightlifting before.

If you still are looking for equipment, K-Mart usually have them for an affordable price. I would also recommend ebay, but deliveries are taking forever!

Some equipment you could get are over-the-door pull-up bar, resistance bands and sandbags. Don't bother with a full bench setup if you're planning on hitting the gym after the pandemic blows out.

  • Two 10L bottles, fill them with water or sand. Make sure they have a good grip.

Youtube Calisthenics training, as there is a lot you can do at home.

I started a year ago, and found that consistency is the way to make changes to your strength and conditioning. I went from 0 hours a week to a consistent 10 hours.

  • Sorry mate, you came late to the party.

All rusted and second hand barbells/dumbbells and other gym equipment are more than double RRP.

There will be new stock late May to July at best.

  • Can't seem to edit my previous post, but this thread should get you in the right position and tweaks a workout based on minimal equipment w/ either full body or P-P-L or Upper/Lower routines.
