Budget VR PC (Already Have Some Parts)

Hey All,

So I currently have a Ryzen 7 1800X and a motherboard (can't think of the model off the top of my head).

So I need all the other parts and looking at what everyone recommends. I want to play some casual VR (Have a HTC Vive) and have the ability to play other games when I want. Don't need it to be running titles on ultra or anything like that.

I also have a ROG PG34Q so not sure if it's worth getting an Nvidia card to utilise the G-SYNC.

Cheers in advance.

    1660 super

    Titan RTX

  • Your CPU is fine for VR maybe get 16 gigs of ram at least 3000 mhz and get a 1660 super or maybe try the used market something like a GTX 1070 most likely will be alright

  • How budget do you want to go?
The minimum for VR would be something like a RX580, with 8GB ram, 240gb SATA SSD + mechanical HDD. If you plan on playing Alyx, make sure you have 6GB VRAM (less is possible, though YMMV).

My recommendation would be a 1TB SSD (SATA is fine), 16GB Ram, 2060S or above.

From a quick look on Ozbargain:
    1TB SSD $180

    16GB Corsair Vengeance $140.65

Deals of graphics cards are sadly hard to come by.

  • Nvidia GTX1070Ti would be great for VR if you find someone selling a card.

  • Don't need it to be running titles on ultra or anything like that.

Moderate your expectations. VR wallops everything so contemporary games are running on low to get locked 90FPS eg. Dirt Rally.

But that said Dirt Rally is a worst case scenario and there are tons of games that will run fine.

not sure if it's worth getting an Nvidia card to utilise the G-SYNC.

Absolutely get G-sync unless you only play games where fps doesn't matter eg Civilisation

I have a 1660 Super and it runs everything perfectly and new games at ultra / very high settings very smoothly too (Also have 16GB Ram if that helps)

VR Graphics aren't that graphically hungry so I'm not sure why they need such high specs PC wise

  • Your CPU is fine.

RTX 2070 at minimum. Otherwise just wait for next gen. Low fps VR is NOT fun.

    • Bit of an overkill…

      • Not at all. I previously used a 1060. Low fps sucks. The experience is far worse and lots will get "motion sick".

        • I've got a 1660 Super and it runs everything at ultra/Epic without issue. Maybe it was the headset you used

          • @Danstar: Yeah benchmarks disagree with you. Maybe it was the low quality game you were playing.

For instance - here's benchmarks on Alyx which EVERYONE with VR must play. It's simply groundbreaking.

"The GTX 1660 Super struggles at Medium settings and it drops or requires 190 frames to be synthesized. It does better with Low settings…"

            • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Alyx is literally the latest release with probably the highest specs for a VR game.

I’ve played basically every other game but that with high end graphics to low end. And a 2070 is definitely
              NOt needed

              • @Danstar: You got 80+fps in Skyrim VR, Project Cars 2 or DCS? Unlikely.

You can't call it overkill when your suggestion is literally already outdated as it can't run a modern game. Defend your card all you want but it's not a sound choice for OP. Best to get something that will play all the upcoming titles…

                • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: 90~ on Skyrim

All I’m saying is, if on a budget a 1660 Super would be sufficient enough (even if it’s at the low end of sufficiency)

            • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: the 4 graphics settings in Half Life Alyx are pretty indistinguishable, what is much more important is the dynamic resolution scaling, GTX 1660 Super for me was running at about 150% on High with no issues at all, while it would be nice to have an RTX 2070 to be able to crank up the resolution scaling it can easily be run on a far worse graphics card and still be super enjoyable.

I originally played it on a GTX 1060 3gb/i5 3550(well below minimum specs) and while it was pretty choppy at times, still completely playable and very enjoyable (low at 100%).

Personally I would reccommend a used 1060 6gb, It would run half life alyx well and would be fantastic for pretty much every other game.

              • @hugamuga: Any idea if my GTX780 will keep up?

                • @algy: Unlikely for any 'decent' game
