MacBook A1466 - Spilt Liquid Last Night but It Is Now Working- Is Service Required?

Last night I spilt champagne on my MacBook A1466. It went black and I flipped it straightaway to drain. I was heading to a repairer but just turned it on (16 hours after the spill) and it is working and charging fine. Dodged a bullet! Is any further action required, please? Thanks guys.

I would remove the back and leave it in a warm room or under an AC for at least a day or two to be safe, residual liquid could still easily move around and create a short.

After this, as long as the keys aren't sticking and all the ports are working I'd say you're in the clear.

    Waste of champagne IMO.

As above suggestions, also store it upside down on a towel for a couple of days.

hmm…Laptop no longer hungover. Might wanna spill some coffee (just to be sure)….

Ordinarily you should dilute or rinse with distilled water, but I wouldn't get water anywhere near a physical HD.

    • A1466 is 128GB SSD, no physical HD.

      • What does that mean? (In relation to my problem)

That your Mac has a blade SSD as opposed to a Physical HD.
A 2.5in HD might have slightly more protection than a SSD Blade, nothing you can do about that…

Anyhow, let it dry and then back it up.

Wrap it with some thin fabric and leave it covered with rice in a sealed container/bag and problem solved.

    • Difficult to buy rice or pasta at present…

I hope it wasn't wine because that is horribly corrosive to logic boards. In the case of wine spills, you don't even wait for the liquid to dry out — you take it to the repair shop right away for ultrasonic cleaning to remove the contamination before corrosion sets in and permanently damages the board.

    • Champagne- any idea of price to clean?

No idea, since we don't know how far the liquid penetrated into your mac and whether your logic board needs cleaning or repairs.

But, get it looked at pronto.

        • Working now - does that info help? Ballpark figure? Maximum price to pay?

          • @kobrien456: I was on my way to a repairer before I successfully turned it on. He said between $200 and $500. I indicated I probably wouldn't fix it if it was more than $300. Does anyone know how much for ultrasonic clean, please?

Have you got a recent backup of your computer? Forget repairs at this stage. They'll most likely replace the entire logic board,

I know someone who had one of these in a bag and a water bottle opened up. Pulled it out of a pool of water, left it out for a week and it was unscathed except for the wifi card. Stuck a usb in it and kept using it for a while.

I'd avoid using it for a while to let it fully dry, but then you should back it up and probably assume it's gonna die soon anyway. I'd be concerned about residue (sugars etc) from the champagne remaining on the board, and be prepared to replace it soon.

Repair would mean replacing the logic board probably, but if that's too expensive, and you are so inclined, you could try opening it up and checking for signs of champagne inside, and clean it up yourself, which might be enough to avoid future trouble. Basically just using a cotton bud to wipe it with metho or something. Worst case you kill it anyway, but at least at a time you are ready for it to die.

Or YOLO just pour a bottle of distilled water into it, leave it in the sun for a week, and pray it turns back on.

  • FYI all… I tracked down a friend of a friend who is a repairer. He said not to worry. If it stops working see him then. He said $125 to clean and dry it. Just in case it helps anyone with the same problem in the future. He said champagne while not ideal, is one of the better liquids to spill.
