Headphones Good Enough for Gaming? (Wireless)

Hi Guys,

Was hoping you guys can input -

I'm looking to buy a Wireless Gaming headset for my Nintendo Switch (Prepared to buy a bluetooth adapter if it does not come with) and PS4. Price range $150-250

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with using SONY WH-XB900/Sony WH-1000XM3 or Bose QC35'S as a gaming headset?

Do these headphones work the same, worse or better with the consoles? Or should i buy a Wireless headset instead?

Do you guys have any recommendations for good wireless gaming headsets within my price range? I have looked at the logitech g935 reviews and thus far like them

Thanks so much for reading!

  • I have a pair of Sony MDR-1000X headphones which are like 2 generations old WH-1000XM3. I use that for all my gaming and absolutely love them.

Only issue is you cannot pair them with PS4. PS4 doesn't support wireless bluetooth audio except for some officially licensed ones. But I use them plugged in with 3.5mm jack into the controller with the ambient noise function on, and they're super good, I'm extremely happy with them for gaming.

I tried using my older wired Logitech gaming headset for gaming, both on my PC and PS4, and without noise cancellation, it just isn't the same for me, but YMMV.

    • PS4 doesn't support wireless bluetooth audio except for some officially licensed ones.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but PS4 doesn't seem to support bluetooth audio at all. Even the first-party headsets don't support wireless via bluetooth, so I don't think the officially licensed third-party ones do either. I have the Platinum Wireless Headset; the headset itself is wireless, but it comes with a USB dongle that you need to plug into the PS4 for it to actually work.

    I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3.

They do a FANTASTIC job with my Switch… BUT…

They won't work natively. You need to buy a dedicated bluetooth adapter in order to get BT headphones working with the Switch.

I ended up buying the Genki Bluetooth Switch adapter, and it works seamlessly with my WH-1000's.

Expensive setup, but the noise isolation and wireless connection is absolute gold on my train commute to work.

    • Is there audio lag?

      • None that I've noticed.

  • I have MX3's and use them on my PC. You notice delay in gaming at first but I got used to it very quick, you also notice the difference in sound quality (oh so much better) compared to a traditional gaming headset (I come from using hyper X cloud 2/flights). No microphone prevents it from being a good headset, but as headphones noise cancelling with music, gaming, movies is great. I'll be investing in the next generation 100% for that dual bluetooth.

I'm also using a cheap Bluetooth use adaptor on my PC, and it's using the worst codec, have still yet to invest in a aptx compatible Bluetooth dongle, which should step up the quality and latency.

  • Did you ever end up getting some, OP? I'm in the market myself (my Bose QCIIs have terrible crackling audio quality in headset mode on my PC, only sounds good in headphones mode but then I can't use the microphone for gaming).

  • I use wireless headphones in games and I will say that it is quite playable, but if you want a good sound, such as good wired headphones, you will have to pay a tidy sum.

  • The sound quality will be much worse than wired headphones.

For anyone coming late like me, LinusTechTips did a video about a month ago on exactly this topic. Helped me pick the G935's. Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5dPvW7NMJE
