          The new MacBook Air is out. I’ve been using a 2014 MacBook Pro on a daily basis and it’s travelled overseas with me on 14 occasions with no discernible decrease in performance. Quality build as well. I don’t think I will ever go back to windows machines ever.

  • Lenovo E595 15" or E495 14". Its not a fashion statement like a macbook, but they are solid, will last and are easy on the hip pocket. Only thing you might not like is the weight. But weigh up (pun intended) how much the screen size matters to you. A couple of hundred grams extra is not going to kill you.
    Order directly from the Lenovo site as they frequently have sales and work with cashrewards (3% for the E series I think).
    If you really want a super slim laptop be prepared to pay a lot more and have more issues with heat.
    Depending on how much/what type of gaming you plan to do you may need something with a dedicated graphics card.

    • I play PUBG and im looking to get around 15 inch screen size

      • Hmm, PUBG can be a bit demanding graphics wise, so you may need to choose between something like the Lenovo E15 with the added AMD Radeon RX 640 2GB GDDR5 ~$1050 (business laptop with very basic graphics card…..may run PUBG OK at low settings), or something like a low end gaming laptop. I can recommend the Metabox brand. Probably the basic Alpha-X model which comes to about $1400 (just remember to add windows OS).
        Dell G5s are decent and sometimes have good sales, but tend to be a bit more expensive.
        Laptops are a pain in the arse to choose between, there are a million of them and they change every 6-12 months, all with slightly different specs. I'm an IT guy and it even drives me nuts.

        • Damn the alpha x is huge so hard to pick good laptop

        • What do you think of the razar? And MSI laptops

          • @sosleepy: Razer is usually decent, but its a high end brand and tends to be expensive (you pay for that light up prettyness).
            MSI can be a mixed bag, they do some OK systems, but I don't know too much about their longevity.
            I wouldn't even touch an HP or an Acer due to bad track records with breaks and warranty.
            Just had look at the dimensions of the Alpha-x. It is the same L and W as the lenovo (and most 15" laptops) but it is thicker. This is because it has a much better cooling system to deal with higher temps due to the gamin graphics cards/gpus. Its the trade off for gaming performance.
            It's not an easy decision you face :P

            • @fenric: how about the Dell Xps? do you know anything about it

              • +1

                @sosleepy: Dell is like the Toyota of computers, they make good reliable stuff, but it does cost a bit more.
                You would not be unhappy with a dell i think. Just figure out what you value more.. weight/lightness, power, gaming potential and find a compromise. You will have to sacrifice somewhere. Its the old Fast, Cheap and Cool….pick 2. Heat it a major killer of laptops, so if you want to game make sure you get something that can vent the heat properly (the thinner they are, the more issues they have getting rid of heat)
                oh, and a couple more things. Don't get a 4k screen (bad for gaming), 8GB ram is plenty for normal + gaming use. Get a solid state primary drive (the one with windows on it, though i'm not sure you will find many with a normal HDD anymore) and then cheap, slow second drive if needed. Wifi/network cards make no difference to anything, so just stick with a bog standard one.

    Dell XPS 13. Have been using one for the last 5 years.

    Depends how immediately, you need the laptop. AMD's Renoir chips (ryzen 4000) should come out soon ish. They have better battery life than their comparable Intel parts. Also their integrated gpu's are better than Intel's Icelake igpu.

    If they actually come out soon there is the
    * Lenovo x13 amd
    * Lenovo slim 7 amd
    * Acer swift 3 AMD
