Help GOLDFISH Sideways after Puring Algae Control!

Hey guys,

Have kept goldfish for years then decided to try algae control from Wooloworths.

They were perfectly fine then i poured the correct dosage into the water and around 30-60min later three of them are sideways stunned not moving. I moved them to my other tank, one improved the other two still sideways. I've searched online couldn't find much, and planning to go to the vet soon and ask them, but any suggestions?

Got a photo of the tank?

I would immediately do a small water change, ensuring you use chlorine remover. Also ensure there's water movement for oxygen generation.

There are better ways to deal with algae than dumping algaecides into the water. Water changes, lights off for a few days etc.

  • do a 90% water change right now!!
if it just happened. do a massive water change. and they should slowly recover on their own

I'm no expert but this page suggests to turn the aeration on full bore:

vets rarely know much about fish. they wont do much probably just bad advice. google and YouTube would be a better source of info on fish problems

It's amusing that you chose to capitalise YouTube correctly and nothing else. Did you copy and paste the word?

      • +3

no i have a modern smart phone with a bias towards YouTube and not google and it does it automatically. should have used some of your typing time for a little bit more pondering time.

        • +1

Don't most phones do the capitalisation for you as well?

          • @brendanm: depends if your phone has a preference towards YouTube

            • @ego22: No, it doesn't. Any phone does capitalisation.

@ego22: my phone has a preference towards RedTube

This is going to sound like bullshit but I promise it's true! This happened to my fish when I was a kid, I remember my Dad added a small drop of whiskey to the goldfish bowl (like a thimble full) and the fish were swimming normally a few hours later. Smashed out of their tiny little minds probably, but swimming normally!

This is a swim bladder issue - look at the below site. I have treated this with non-iodised salt (sea salt worked for me)

    https://www.thesprucepets.com/swim-bladder-disorder-in-aquar…

How do you treat swim bladder in fish?
    Treatment
Keeping the water especially clean and between 78 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Adding a small amount of aquarium salt to the tank.
Reducing the water level to make it easier for the fish to move around within the tank.
Reducing water flow in tanks with a strong current.

Did you buy the goldfish as entertainment for your cat/s?

    • dont think it is…it happened straight after the pouring of algae control, and 2 passsed away within an hour so dont think it is

  • How are the fish.

(Feck. I think I'm emotionally invested.)

  • How old is he/she?
