Which Instant Turf to Get in South Australia?

Looking to lay instant turf but not sure which type to go for. I have santa ana in the front yard but find there is a lot of maintenance and it goes dull in winter. Now looking for a hardy instant lawn for the back yard i can try not to kill. it is not a play space but we have 2 golden retriever puppies if that changes anything.

I need 6m x 5m area (30 sqm?) done. What is a good lawn to use and where to buy? I am thinking possibly Sir Walter from Bunnings for convenience?

Bunnings sells Sir Walter for $6.65 for 0.5m² (1200mm x 400mm) or 30sqm Pallet for $498. i cant seem to make the maths work? does 30sqm = 60 lots of 0.5m² (@$6.65) = $399?? I must be going wrong somewhere.

Your advice on this matter is appreciated

  • Well your maths is a little off… 1200x4000 isn't quite 0.5m², actually 0.48m².

But even then, 63x 1200x400 strips =30.24m² at only $418.95.. Is there delivery rolled into the Pallet price maybe? Othwerwise it makes no sense to me (and it's expensive delivery!).

    My vote is Sir Walter.

I replaced our front lawn several years ago which was a couch (Winter Green) with buffalo (Palmetto) - I got sick of it sending runners into the garden beds. The Palmetto is a huge improvement on what we had, however I don't think it's as good as Sir Walter.

The back lawn is still winter green but I've got plans to rip this out & replace with Sir Walter

I remember when he was just Walter. lol

    • +1 for sir walker, i have sir walter & Kikuyu, The sir water is much greener and less maintenance required. Much courser though.

    • God I hate my couch.

Don’t get it from Bunnings. It’ll be cheaper from a turf supplier - and fresher.

  • Give a few local suppliers a call - it's usually cheaper than Bunnings. Depending on where in SA you are, if you're metro most of them include delivery in their pricing. Also the stuff from Bunnings often sits there for ages, the first store we tried, some idiot had watered the stack and half the pallet was dead and the whole stack was really hot, so we had to try a couple of stores before we actually bought some. Only needed 3-4 square metres though!

The other thing to do if you aren't in a hurry is keep an eye on gumtree and Facebook marketplace. Some of our friends found it was cheaper when they did theirs, to buy two pallets rather than one pallet + what they needed. They sold the half pallet or so that was leftover on Facebook for $100 and came out even further ahead.

  • Thank you everyone, turns out the pallet price includes $99 metro delivery but did not mention it in the description. It is the same 0.5sqm price ($6.65) for any quantity.

Ended up deciding on Sir Walter with Hicks Instant Turf - $11.55 sqm and only $120 delivery for country (80 km) which would be cheaper than hiring a trailer and paying fuel. I see now Bunnings is way over priced considering some of the suppliers also have free metro delivery.
