Man Seeking LFL- Laptop for Looking

Put simply I'm seeking the best screen possible, with no regards for gaming

I'm up for a new bedtime browser $2K budge"t. Reckon 16gig memory for fast browsing, not going to be used for gaming so want to put the money in to the screen. Does not need to be mobile or big battery it will sit on my belly and entertain me. My eyes are getting bad so big and clear is my motivation but it seems all the big screen laptops are meant for gaming.

Looking at 17" but everything seems to be 1080p in my price bracket - any suggestions?

      so that's 3 minutes…now what?

  • it seems all the big screen laptops are meant for gaming

Huh. Almost as though gamers actually have an expectation of quality hardware.

Maybe you should, in fact, be looking for gaming laptops - as you can then expect a reasonably good level of quality.

    • I get you - what the drawback with pure "gaming" machines is, they have expensive video cards/processors behind the screen. Those items aren't important to me though, I would prefer to have the best screen possible for the price, without having it eaten up by the other tech. Not sure such a system exists though

Not an option with laptops, but a DIY desktop build would work if you REALLY want a good screen!

A cheap Techfast desktop for $700, then pair it with a monitor on an arm at the end of the bed - A 34" ultrawide would work great, or any 4k TV sitting on a table. Wireless KB+M on a tray.

Yes, you ARE limited to having the screen in a fixed location - but with a $2k budget you could simply buy another screen (ultrawides for $650 each) and use your existing laptop on your desk.

  • Are you sure you want such a big laptop for lying in bed?
I have a 15 inch laptop which sits on a desk because the size is annoying to use anywhere else.

But I am hanging onto a tiny 12" macbook just because it is incredibly easy to use on the couch or in bed. Basically the size and weight of an ipad so it's comfortable to position and move around with just one hand etc. Mobility comes in handy just for general comfort.

And as great as that thing is, while writing that paragraph I remembered the LG Gram which might be better for you. Big 17" screen with a higher resolution screen than most, but the same weight as a macbook air, so it would be great for consuming stuff without being a literal pain to have sitting on you for a while.
Not sure where you can get them or if they are even in Aus, but international sellers may be an option

    • now you're talking - I heard of the gram but couldn't find anything locally….

Just get an i5 surface pro 7. 128gb ssd, 8gb of ram which is more than enough for browsing and it has a higher res screen (2736x1824). Also without the keyboard in the way you can sit it closer to your face so the screen will appear bigger

    • a bit small screen wise. I have a 13" Yoga at the moment and looking to go bigger. The 15" Surface laptop looks promising.
