Turning ALDI Tablet into an eReader

Hi Ob'ers
Are there any suggestions on how I can clean up the Aldi (ONIX) tablet so I can use it comfortably as an e-reader?
I bought it with hopes that it could at least handle some simple apps for my kids (aged <5), but it was frightfully laggy.

Are there any launchers or roms that could somehow make the Onix tablet useable? Or should I just cut my losses and bin it?

Thanks!

    What is the screen resolution?

Are you within the 60 days return policy? If not, bin it as the specs are from 2011.

    • Unfortunately not! :-(

Not sure how easy it is but if you can google the name of the tablet (it's actual product or model number) you may be able to find compatible ROMS for it floating about.

ALDI tablets are usually rebadged no-name obscure chinese tabs which typically have locked bootloaders, meaning you might need to root them first in order to install a custom recovery.

Install your app of choice, put a shortcut on the main screen. Ignore everything else on the tablet.

Open app of choice, read your book.

Apps of choice could be amazon Kindle or overdrive or any of ebook apps

agree with this… if you want to customise I would only go so far as using something like Nova launcher… that way you have flexibility to simplify the set up.

Use the Kindle App to start reading from your devices.

In your preferred Android app store, search "Kindle."
In the search results, select Amazon Kindle.
Select Install to download and install, or Update to update the Kindle app.

To improve performance, delete any Apps you don't use, make sure no apps running in background. The 16GB of storage is more than most Kindle devices.

When reading, turn off WiFi and BLUETOOTH to make the battery last longer.

  • Disable and uninstall all the preinstalled apps and bloat, if you're feeling hardcore check out a guide on how to do it using ADB.

Install a light launcher like KISS and your ebook app, disable WiFi/BT/sync/etc, dont sign into a google account, load up SD card/internal with books over USB.
