New Laptop - Thoughts?

I'm currently using a 2014 Macbook Air, and it's extremely sluggish, even just browsing (using Chrome and having 10+ tabs open). This is despite me having wiped it and reinstalled the OS (and upgraded).

Thinking about getting this - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-15-…

Thoughts? Will it be a noticeable upgrade?

A 2014 Macbook Air shouldn't be sluggish at all especially for just browsing, spend a bit more time trying to diagnose the issue. Swap Chrome for Firefox or Safari.

The Lenovo runs Windows, are you prepared for OS change? You're going from a premium metal (albeit older) to a basic plastic cheap laptop (albeit higher spec), are you happy with that trade-off?

    • I figured Chrome would get the finger pointed out at it (and rightfully so). Will give Safari a shot.

I've used Windows a lot in the past, so don't mind swapping back.

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and found using Chrome sluggish/RAM hungry.

Switched to Safari and it is much better now.

Few years ago I went from an Air to a Pro and was disappointed in battery life. I had been using Chrome all the time, and found that switching to Safari increased the battery life by a few hours, matching what I had been getting with the Air. Presumably I had been reducing battery life on the Air for years without even realising it.

Ever since I've avoided Chrome on macbooks as much as possible, and notice the battery life is much shorter when I actually do need to use Chrome, and they heat up a lot more. With this comes sluggishness etc
Basically, for some reason you gotta use Safari on a macbook, the difference is tangible.

Fresh os install should fix it good.

Nope, as I said, I've done this.

6 years old - if it's been used a lot it'd be beneficial to get a new battery. Have you noticed it lasts a lot less on one charge than it used too? If you usually have it plugged in that can actually degrade battery fast as well.

do you have a dodgy chrome extension/plugin ?

    • Good point. I probably have too many extensions.

I'm guessing you're using 2 core i3 and 4gb ram, so yes Lenovo is a lot faster

    • i5 dual core, 4GB RAM

      • Absolutely no excuse for being sluggish. It's Chrome being it's usual battery-draining resource-hogging mess. Get used to another browser and save yourself a grand.

Check battery health and cycle count, maybe consider spending a bit on a replacement if it needs it.

      • Hows the cpu temp and usage? below 90°C and not at 100% load?

  • The 2014 Air shouldn't be slow at all - even the version with 4GB RAM (though, you might be creeping on the limit with 10 tabs in Chrome). Could install Windows 10 on it - my 2013 13" Retina definitely feels a lot snappier on Windows (at the expense of battery life) but also doesn't feel slow in MacOS.
