MX-5 = Hairdresser..?

Hey! First time poster but long time reader, was just curious as to why the MX5 cops so much heat about it being a hairdresser's car? I was interested in getting one based on the reviews and pricing but not sure how i feel about other car enthusiasts' sentiment regarding it, is it just the older models everyone seems to equate to being a hairdresser's car?

Current hair dresser car of choice is a 4 cylinder Mustang convertible.
MX-5 is a decent car, go for it.
Personally, I would love a Porsche 718 Cayman

  • Had 2 MX 5 - great cars
Girlfriend is hairdresser in Vietnam so don’t mind the flak.
    Now Mustang GT convertible

I was looking to buy a ND recently as a weekend toy, but then Covid19 happened.

Most people who call them hairdressers car can't drive manual.

Most motoring enthusiasts who can drive manual at least rate them.

    Please buy the manual.

End of the day who gives a (profanity) what people think

  • MX5's (and Celica's back in the day) got that reputation because they look very sporty but don't have 200kw+. BRZ etc not far off it to me.

Having said that, an MX5 is best known for it's awesome go-kart like handling. It's not a drag car. It has a good cult following, if you like it, go for it! Screw what anyone thinks. I don't like them because I don't like convertible / roadsters but that's all (I don't think they're a girls car).

  • I mean, it's rear-drive at least.

Remember the Capri? That wasn't. It was a rebodied Laser.
The AW11 MR2 was a flipped and rebodied Corolla.
The CRX was a shorter wheelbase, rebodied Civic.

The MX5 was a RWD 323 with the 929 gearbox. All were parts-bin cars to a degree.

Why does everyone call the mx 5 slow?

The current model can do 0-100 in sub 6 seconds.

Faster than some hot hatches out there.

    • Because high school kids these days can do below 6 in their DSG Golf… and downshift right before redlight stop…

Doesnt take alot to drive fast in a straightline these days…

      Yea… nah… MX5 is awesome.

  • On the contrary, I think the older models hold higher regards as 'drivers cars' for most petrol heads. If you get an MX-5, the last thing you're going to think about is other peoples impressions of the driver, as you just going to be focusing on the apex of the next corner, and how you're going to make the smoothest/fastest navigation through it! The older models are stripped back, no-frills, budget motoring. The new models are getting more and more options and features, making them more appealing to wider markets. I only hope that they don't succumb to this epidemic we are seeing now, where all cars are getting bigger, heavier, slower.

  • One thing you gotta be aware of in MX is people cannot see you. Frequently you are travelling below the window line of even a sedan, never mind an SUV. Pople will reverse out in front of you - angle parking - even if they’ve looked out physically, camera wont pick you up. You are out of sight.

    • Sounds like OP is a bit hesitant about being seen in one anyway!

It will make you a better driver. MX5s are highly regarded by car enthusiast.

One of the most engaging gear box, and most refined NA engine I have came across. I had 2ZZGE lift and k20A vtec some years ago… no match to what Mazda managed to built into the ND…

PS. Spend $500 for AA upgrade… the mazda informant system is outright sht…

Post 17 models' sensors are excellent… when the roof is up… the only thing you can see is pretty much what's infront of you… alot of blindspots/obstructed views…
