Anyone Having Samsung Galaxy S20+ Issues?

Hey Ozbargainers,

So I got the S20+ 128gb 5G on the EPP special back in Feb as a preorder. It was to upgrade on my S7 which I had for about 4 years. Well anti-climatic it has been since the upgrade.

To start, the camera has been nothing short of disappointing. My missus has a Note8 and comments how crap my phone's pics (especially videos) are versus hers. Fam and friends have said the same. The camera was one of the selling points for me and I would have looked at other brands had it not been for this. Autobrightness is also wonky and never has the right light balance (not adaptive brightness on or off it has the same issue). The operating system freezes now and then as well.

The phone just has not met any expectations and may be the last Samsung I ever buy. I have contacted Samsung who have told me to send it in for repairs (Auspost only) so I will be mobile-less for 10days at minimum.

I just wanted to temp check to see if anyone else is experiencing similar issues?
I trolled the net and see the camera has been disappointing to reviews but it is mixed. I upgraded the cam software that was pushed out last week thinking this would solve it but nothing.

I fear I may have a lemon on my hands.

Thanks for any feedback.

I moved from a s9+ to a s20+, this was after years of avoiding Samsung due to the lemon S3 I had a few years back.

I haven't had the same issues as you but have found the s20+ to be a bit meh, I won't be changing however I don't think it will join the list of great phones I have had in my life.

  • Checked settings?

1 thing that surprised me in the S10 for example, was out of the box the display wasn't set to the highest resolution. Can't remember if the camera was the same.

Does seem odd, Samsung cameras are usually highly regarded

    • Yeah i did make the same changes on the phone when i got it but will have a crack again at some changes. Cheers

  • Did you read any reviews before buying the phone? Samsung has decided to go with taking sharper photos and duller/ more natural colour complex with the S20. Sounds like that's not your missus and fam's your style :/

I was in the same boat as you, going from a S7 to a S20+.

I've been pretty happy with the phone so far, but haven't had much of a chance to use the camera with the lockdowns. The camera doesn't seem overly better than my wife's S10, but I think is still better than the S7. I was considering getting the S20 Ultra before launch but am glad I didn't given some of the issues.

Brightness wise I've not had any issues with it not adapting to the brightness, only really that the lowest available brightness is still very bright in pitch black.

I think the S20 series was very overhyped and probably a big letdown for some.

  • I had an issue with Note 10 recently. Had sent it to the Samsung kiosk in Westfield shopping centre twice. I received the phone back the next day. So they are pretty quick. Maybe try sending it to their service centre?

If they fix the issue… is a totally different story. I ended up taking It back to where i purchased, Officeworks. Officeworks took the phone back and refunded the money.

Samsung's service center seems really crappy.

    • Cheers. Unfortunately kiosks are shut during this Covid-19 crisis so Auspost the only option. I will give them a go but seems likely a refund will be due

I've heard about issues with auto focus, but not anything about the issues you listed. The stuttering especially makes me think it might just be a faulty device.

    • Yeah i have the autofocus issue as well

Been using Android since 2009 and WinMo and Symbian before that.
Had S10+ for 12 months which was easily one of the best phones owned but S20+ and Ultra are such a disappointed especially with the price tag they carry.

I never thought I'd ever own an iPhone but I eventually did. 11 Pro Max is just so much better. The camera is miles ahead of the competition. I feel like taking pictures more often than ever.

I'm currently using a note8 and was thinking that the s20+ would be my next, but based on these reports rethinking the decision.

I've also been thinking of getting the iPhone 11 instead. I really want an excellent photo shooter. Thing is I really like the versatility of android and have not used an iPhone since the iPhone 3gs. The Note8 has been an awesome phone, which I will hand down to my partner.

Also concerner that the iPhone 11 will probably have an inferior display. I won't pay for an iPhone 11 Pro, it's too expensive.

If only the P40 Pro had the Google play store.

    • If you are concerned about the refresh rate then yes, get an Android, otherwise, iPhone screen is one of the best and under sunlight visibility is top-notch.

If you don't wanna spend that much then wait for the iPhone SE. I can't believe I'm recommending an iPhone to someone but the camera and the overall experience changed my perception. The only thing I miss is the ability to use YouTube without ads by using 3rd party apps.
