Is There a Better 55" 4k TV for $550 Currently than The TCL 55P8M?

Looking at a new tv (old 50" full HD TCL works fine).

Use fetch tv, Wii, Xbox one s, and Netflix hd, (terrible fttn, 45mbps best).

Is there a better tv for $550($548) than this right now? The dollar seems weak so assuming next year's TVs will cost more $?

  • Aldi has a 65 for same price

  • 55 is the max for the room size/space.

Plus, is that a "better" quality?

    • All the cheap brands tend to have the same "quality".

      • I've been out of the game for a while, but all the different brands used to use same panels with different processing and tuning. Has this changed?

      • I think the "QLED" 58" from Aldi was likely to be pretty good, when it comes back in…https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/521676
It's likely anything at this level will be a chinese-made screen.
I am aware the price at $699 is higher, but thought it was a tempting buy at that technology level, with HDR.
Maybe check out any re-conditioned TV's if you want a better brand?

  • I have heard TCL is better than the entry level brand it was many moons ago (for LCD/LED) but have not seen any personally.
I did LG had a new range of screens at this price point due soon, but don't know how soon. May not be worth the wait…
I've found the Fetch interface and remote better than my TV, I'd be happy for a dumb TV, does not seem to be an option.
I'm also interested in a 55" and wan interested in the new TCL's. The few reviews around seem reasonable.

  • In 2019, Samsung held a 19.8% share of global TV unit sales, followed by LG with its 12.2% share and TCL with its 9.2% share, according to data by IHS Markit.

  • My existing TCL is ok but slow and we use the fetch as the "smart" bit… isn't! My only concern is that review of HDR say that more kits are better and the P8M only goes to 270 nits which doesn't sound a lot.

Does anyone have one and what do you think of it in general? Being able to stream 4k Kodi from google tv would be good if it could do that.

  • I bought a 55” Kogan 4K tv with my Kogan CC credit. I wasn’t expecting much given the price of $449.

But I’m honestly very impressed with it. I have it in my outdoor area and it performs perfectly in a bright area. We’ve watched sport, movies and general TV and honestly I can’t fault it. Haven’t tried gaming though.

No smart features on this tv, but in my opinion in this price range you’d do much better forgetting about smart features and investing in a Chromecast.

  • Hisense 55R6 for $645 might also be worth considering. They don't publish brightness specs though.

  • I don't own a TCL but I've read and watched A LOT of tv reviews over the last couple of months, as I've been shopping around, and everything I've read seems to place TCL and Hisense WAY above other budget tv brands.
