Advice Needed for Prospective Car Buyer with Little Experience

Hi,

My dad and I like some advice on buying an SUV. My dad thinks with the ongoing covid situation it's probably better for me to travel to work in a private vehicles than using public transport.

I would like to get recommendations from ozb community about a bang for buck SUV around $20-25k. Probably second hand. My dad is thinking Honda hrv. I don't have a strong opinion on which suv.

Are there that you would recommend? Cheers

Hrv is tiny for an suv

Why an SUV? Especially the Honda which is basically a jacked up Corolla

And is this a cash buy or finance?

Is this your very first car? How long have you been driving for?

    • Cash buy, SUV cuz my dad prefers it, and since he paying the majority of it, I'm going with him on this.

Initially we thought of buying crv again which we had before but decided hrv should be good enough, and price is cheaper.

Not my first car, been driving for about 3 years but sold it and used public transport after I moved to city for last few years.

    • Isn't the CHR the jacked up Corolla?

The HRV would be a jacked up Civic.

Yeah, but figured more people know Corolla sizing ;) And hence, would recommend Corolla sized car for OP, spending about $10k.

Bank of daddy can help out later, all that's needed is an A-B car.

Now is the best time to use PT because no one is on it. Enjoy the spaciousness while it lasts.

You don’t need an SUV. You don’t need to spend 20-25k.

    How old are you?

    • 20s. Does this matter in the decision making?

Just curious as to why your dad is dictating what you do. Thought you might be 17 or so.

    Why an SUV?

Do you have a specific need for a SUV or do you want an SUV because SUV's are the current craze and you'll look cool?

    • Dad's preference

Can your Daddy adopt me? I wouldn't mind a 25k first car.

    Buy what you want.

If you are old enough to drive you should be old enough to make your own mind up.

You'll never be 100% happy driving something chosen by someone else.

    Subaru Forester or Subaru XV.

if you're just travelling to work, you don't need SUV

If you are in / near the city what parking options are available? I know where I live there isn't much, even if you can afford to pay.

Also, is there parking at work?

PS: You don't need an SUV or to spend $25k for a daily. Just get a beater so you don't get all upset when it's caught in a hailstorm.

Also, there will be plenty of cars being sold at bargain prices by people that have no work. The Skoda group I'm on. Fully loaded Octavia Wagon that was bought last November for $48k. The guy's been retrenched. It will sell for <$40k. It's outside your budget but there will be similar out there.

I think he should try a Subaru. My parents have always owned Subbies from new, but even second had for a late model low km version would be good. Just go for an Imprezza hatch. Has all the safety features.
