Cost of running my iPad

I got a bit bored and thought about how much it cost to run my ipad.

I use on average 2 full cycles of charge per week. (maybe a little more but we'll stick with two)

charger is a 10watt charger, and it seems to take me 5 hours for a full charge.

So i guess it is 10x5= 50watt hour used per charge

2 chargers a week, 2 x 50w = 100watt hour.

52 weeks in a year, so its 52 x 100w = 5.2kwh

Does that sound right?

I think our power costs around 25 cents per kwh, so its about .25 x 5.2 = $1.30 per year to run my ipad.

that sounds like peanuts compared to my laptop.

Can anyone see if im calculating it wrong?

  • Don't forget to add a percentage of your electricity provider service charge and GST.

  • You also forgot to include food so your fingers will work to swipe the screen. That's important. :P

    • hehe, if you can let me know the approximate calories used to power my fingers i will happily factor that in too :)
      but that doesn't technically count:P

  • Is the wattage really per hour? IE. 10 watts per hour?

    • carlitos - very simply yes..

carlitos and cloudy - more complexly though the wattage indicated on the label is the maximum the device will suck down if running at full capacity. In the case of a charger, that's unlikely, it's more likely to run at maximum for the first 40-50% of the charge and then slow as the battery charge increases and it gets harder to push in those electrons…
So cloudy's estimate is probably a slight overestimate.
