Is This a Decent Solar Power Package?

I've been toying with installing solar on the roof of my new house.
Got a fair bit of roof real estate and a family of six - so thinking might be able to go a bit bigger than 5kw.
I stumbled across this package and wondered if there are any PV gurus out there who could let me know if its any good.

FYI they also have 5kw and 30kw versions if anyone is interested. https://www.graysonline.com/sale/5040850/solar-energy/5-30kw…
Thanks in advance.

I suggest some research on www.solarquotes.com.au

  • +1 for using SolarQuotes.

Unless you have 3 phase, most areas limit you at 5kw being fed into the grid which usually means going higher than 6.6kw on the roof will be wastefull (unless you use the excess yourself or store via a battery). 3 phase allows higher (up to 30, but may be wrong there).

  • No, it's not….
If it was, it wouldn't be being sold via grays online

They are bargain basement low quality gear. But you knew that being a 10kw system for under 3k right?

  • Looked at Solarquotes.
It rates the panel brand at 4.5 stars, and the inverter brand at 4.1 stars
Seraphim panels are rated 'entry level', but reputable and supported in Australia.
Solis inverters are rated exactly the same.
The package has a 25/10 year guarantee on panels but only 5 years on the inverter.
Solarquotes suggests a price of between $8-12,000 for a 10kw system.
Based on the foregoing I would suggest this package - while low end - looks to be very good value at 1/3 of the price guide of SQ - but I'm not an expert who dismisses stuff just because of the site on which they are posted, so I could be wrong.

    • I've bought a similar solar package through Gray's before. No problems with it so far (about 18 months). Did plenty of research before buying and all of the products seem well rated/established. The auctions happen regularly though so don't feel like you need to rush into it right now if you aren't ready but I suspect this is probably a less competitive (from other bidders) time than normal.

      Shrug?
This is low end gear, but that doesn't disqualify them if you are realistic that the warranty is not worth much.
If it dies in 5 years you will have well made back your money, regardless of whether you can get warranty service.

The issue with solar warranties is the installer really takes responsibility for making it work. If a panel or inverter is faulty you might be able to get a device repaired, but anybody but the original installer is going to be reluctant to deal with individual component failures.
If it keeps working, great, but could be a headache if it stops. The savings may be worth it.

Yeah sorry, should have clarified, well rated/established for the price. There is certainly better quality stuff out there but at this price point it is pretty decent value.

I think this is close to the way I am feeling mskeggs.
Sure its a cheap system - but its also a very cheap system, and this is Ozbargain after all.
I wouldn't mind a better inverter, but I feel if I get a decent five years out of it I've done ok - and if I get longer I'm laughing.

  • Can you use the Victoria’s government solar panel rebate of $1,888
    https://www.solar.vic.gov.au/solar-panel-rebate
Also does grays actions include installation?
And what about if there isn’t enough roof space do they just put less panels on your roof?

    • If you looked at the URL you would have seen it included installation.
