Depends what you want to do with it. Down isn't very waterproof, to the extent that it loses almost 100% of its insulating properties when wet. This is mitigated in the newer DWR style goods but generally if you want to do something active, you don't wear down. When you do you have synthetic insulation in the underarms, lower back etc that might sweat through.
Down, and the high loft stuff especially (800 fill power) is almost unbeatable in warmth-for-weight though, so you prefer down if you aren't likely to sweat- overnights, walking around, belaying the bottom of a climb etc.
Synthetics are great for skiing, esp skin/skitouring and other high intensity exercise.
