Thanks so much :) Wouldn't have thought of the algae or all the other problems you've mentionned. Can't believe I was so tempted to buy that stuff.$27(incl shipping) for 2 rectangular plastic bowls…and they weren't even going to throw in the empty soft drink bottle ;) $2, huh? I'll look around for it. After all, not going for holidays before another 8 weeks.

Have used the store with no problems, have no idea about the feeders though.
Because we had a little dog who loved to climb into a regular water bowl and play, we ended up buying just a single one of these type of things from BigW for around $11, and it's suitable for either water or food. (rectangular box that clips into the bowl)
Having had experience with that one, I'd suggest to you that you really don't want want an all in one unit like that because unless you have aditives in the water to prevent it, light loves the water and algae develops really quickly, so it needs to be rinsed every couple of days or so. This in itself is not really a problem - a quick rinse when you're at the tap filling the container anyway takes all of about 2 seconds.
On the other hand, with a combined set up like that you'd need to empty out the food side to be able to do so. Even if you didn't have the algae problem, the dish needs to be turned upside down to replace the water bottle.
When we were going away for a couple of days a few months ago, and having someone come feed the dogs, I also picked up at one of the dollar-type stores a water bowl that a soft drink bottle screws into (same type of set up as the water side of your gadget) for $2. I don't remember which shop it was though sorry.
