      Then they….failed. My Beaglebone Blacks use Oracle Java 8 anyhow. Foiled! Strange decision to break the standard distro for so many boards, though.

Raspberry owners, what are some cool things that you are running on your Raspberry Pi?

  Most common projects seem to be pi hole (network-wide ad blocking), retropie (Nintendo, Playstation, Atari games + more), and smart mirrors.
  
  I don't really get that much use out of mine, but it did get me into looking through the rpi resources and using it as a launching pad to learn Python and interacting with the real world (eg. push a button, make the pi do something). It's actually kinda been the catalyst for me having a serious think about going back to study and switching careers.
  
  A few other interesting ideas:
  - track aircraft and feed your data into FlightRadar24 or FlightAware (bonus, they'll give you a free pro membership for doing so!)
  - automate/monitor home brewing processes
  - program your christmas lights to sync to music
  - A cheap alternative to Network-Attached Storage (NAS)
  - Your own VPN
  - Home automation
  
  A lot of this stuff could be done on a regular computer, but the point of it being so cheap, small and low powered makes it perfect for being a dedicated computer for small projects you might have in mind.

    Thanks for sharing that. Pi hole seems to be most common use case too. I just ordered one a few days back and yet to receive it. I don't have many ideas as well, but just ordered since the concept of running low powered computer 24X7 always interested me. How did you find the power usage? Did it make significant difference in the power bill?

      Never used mine 24/7, but running off what is essentially a mobile phone charger, the cost wouldn't be all that noticeable…

  I'm mainly using mine for Pi-hole Network-wide Adblocking and the other one is for MagicMirror where you could DIY a 2-way mirror and put a screen behind it where it shows information about your travel time from your place to a pre-programmed place (work, school, relatives etc). Calendar of events, Stocks, Status of your SMart devices (on-off), Status of your housemates if they are already home, oh and also RSS feed of Ozbargain :P while brushing your teeth looking into the MagicMirror.

  I use an RPi 3 with a USB TV tuner and the OpenELEC platform to run Kodi and TVHeadend server.
  Other pi zero W run around the house with open ELEC/kodi to stream FTA TV in places without antenna connections or on phones/tablets.
  Other pi runs PiHiole to get rid of ads network wide and piVPN for remote access and FTA TV.

  Some uses I have for mine
  - collecting and displaying data about my solar + water usage, temps etc (grafana/influx/telegraf/mosquitto stack)
  - collecting and displaying data about PCs on my network - disk usage, network IO etc
  - running voip PBX with a bunch of vintage phones (freeswitch)
  - opening door in chook shed (python)
  - security camera in garage
  - monitoring power usage in caravan (grafana/influx)
  
  Some future uses
  - controller for my ubiquiti network
  - turn on hotwater heater when solar is above certain level
  - auto gate opener for the driveway.
  - number plate recognition at front gate
