New Steam Account for Free GAMES Only

Hi All

With the constant posts here (i'd say at least once a week), i'm thinking of setting up a new steam account purely for free games. I want to keep this going for about 6 months / 1 year, then I would be looking at giving the finding a way to give the account away to a disadvantaged child who loves video games, but can't afford to buy any of them.

Thoughts? Would anyone be keen on joining me?

Are you planning to donate a machine capable of playing them as well?
Otherwise, you seem to be solving a problem that doesn't really exist.

There's plenty of free games to play.

    • well no, but most of the steam games end to be low spec, and can be played on low tier machines. I have a $500 machine from 6 years ago and can play everything fine.

    • also, the idea isn't really solving a problem, just something nice to do.

You appear to have missed the point that if you can't afford a game, then you also can't afford the computer to run the game.

If you have a computer already, then you're probably also aware of the availability of free games.

First world problems, disadvantaged children dont need games, they need essentials. I'm sure games they cant even play cause they got no computer is the last thing on their mind.

      First world problems

Australia has just held it's hand out to the world donations to save fire ravaged koalas.

Even though the koalas are not children or human,
the bushfires were caused by Australia's policies of ignoring climate change,
and the fires are just the first round in an ever worsening series of fires that will kill hundreds of times more animals across the planet.
and Australia's GDP: 14th highest globally.

Shit, we were taking donations from third world countries.

Point is there's no reason to it.

The fires were actually causes from a source of ignition, igniting a source of fuel, possibly a bit of dry grass.

Are you still part of that group of people who doesn't believe in Climate change because it's be nicer if it wasn't real?

@Ninternet: I believe in climate change, it's been happening since the dawn of time. Are you one of those people who believes anything you are fed by the media? I bet you believed Al Gore when he said we'd literally be swimming to work by now 😂

The ice caps will all be melted by 2000 2010 2020 2030, deny that!

@brendanm: So what you're suggesting is "yes" whilst also using a straw man fallacy to evade the question?

              • @Ninternet: No. I'm suggesting that the climate is changing, and always has been.

                • @brendanm: Right

                  • @Ninternet: Feel free to simply look at a graph from the last 100 years and scream "the sky is falling!" though. Or you could have a look at results from even the last 10,000 years, or go further back if you like. Or just listen to the project if you like being told what to think.

                    You do you 👍

There appears to be a bit of point missing in comments here.

Some pretty decent and desirable games are only free during time windows. Mostly Epic store, but the OP may have just used the word Steam as a well understood description of 'online gaming content delivery platform'. Perhaps some of these free games will promote further connections with existing and/or new friends.

And stop with the judging of who needs what. This is just doing a nice thing to offer up a source of escapism. And, at least in my subjective opinion, escapism can be invaluable.

      No confusion here.
A Steam account alone is useless without an Internet connection and a computer.

If OP was offering even a USB drive with all the games pre-downloaded I could maybe see the point, but anyone who already has an internet connection and a computer to play games can get these games themselves for free just by being informed..

      "How to inform people?"
I'd argue is the same question as
"How to find someone to donate a Steam Account to?"

    • Yes, I have used Steam as an example of an online gaming platform. I know there are other sites, such as the Epic store, Origin, Uplay, etc. that also offer free games, but steam is the most well known to people.

Sure, these kids may not NEED games, but generally, they do need a way to get away from issues in life, or just zone out. Games did this for me, and thanks to sites like Humblebundle (when it was good) I was able to begin loving games. It seems like at least once a week a quality game comes on here, which people do play. Why not get a library of these, and give it to someone who may not have $200 to spend on a few games?

This obviously isn't going to be aimed towards kids who do not have a PC (another issue entirely, and definitely something that needs to be fixed), but for those who do, giving them a library of games they may not have known existed, and a place to relax, and socialize with existing or new friends.

So just tell people… Use the same channels that you'd have used to find the person to give this account to. (whatever that might be)
Then you're helping multiple people instead of just one person for the same (or even less) effort.

It's the "teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime" option. You're proposing to "give the man a fish, feed him for a day"

        • exactly - if it's aimed at kids who dont have money to buy games, but have the basic necessities to play them, then OP should teach them to OzB for free stuff… like the rest of us

    1. I'm pretty sure this would be breaking Steam's T&Cs
    2. Most the free steam games are garbage
    3. If they don't have the hardware, they can't play it anyway

Honestly, games on a SNES emulator are going to be far more fun and easy to run.
I know you're just trying to do something nice but it's not a good idea.

Thats what Epic launcher is for

  • i picked up some games for free recently, pretty decent ones. each is like a 40-60GB download from Steam or EPIC.. are you expecting them to have unlimited internet as well as a capable computer to play it?

  • Nice thought, but they could just play f2p games like fortnite, league of legends, apex, tft etc.
