Moving into New Home - Best Time to Buy Appliances/Furniture? I Would Think EOFYS or Black Friday

Hi Obzargainers,

We will be moving into our new home at the end of the year and have a few big-ticket items to buy (e.g. appliances, furniture etc).

Because we have the luxury of time to buy these, I wanted to pick the brains of the veterans on this forum and see what people thought about purchase timing.

My experience is that it would be best to make a note of the things we want and to keep an eye out for good deals during EOFY (June) and Black Friday (November), judging from last year. However, I also don't want to rest on my laurels and assume that everything will be cheap at these times.

In your experience, is there a best time to wait for buying these kind of things?

Thanks!

We will be moving into our new home

    All of us?

    • I mean we are in unprecedented times…

Generally yes, EOFY and Black Friday are best.

However also don't discount eBay 20% off sales especially when they coincide with a Good Guys Sale as these prices generally carry across onto the eBay store.

You can also create alerts on Ozbargain for particular products you need and use the product page to find historical deals to make sure the price you see is actually one of the cheapest.

    • awesome tips - thanks! I didn't realise the 20% + Good Guys sales were a thing. That's why ozbargainers are the best.

I'd honestly set a budget and then visit IKEA, look at the model lines e.g. Hemnes or Billy. Get quotes on what furniture is of value to you and then tally it up. If it's important then put it as essential. If not important, you can get it later. Most important furniture are bedding, sofas or office chairs. You'll be spending the most time on that so don't skimp out.

Finally, see if the designs fit with what you're after - e.g. If you've bought a Tudor house, Billy range in white will contrast with the exterior of the house. If you've got an ocean viewing apartment, then it might blend a little better.

Worst comes to the worst, ask an interior designer.

    Oh and Congratulations!

    • thanks heaps. all round good tips as we were going to go with a white/beachy theme. any ozbargainer's tips on interior design?

go to Brosa.com.au and book a 45min virtual consult or an in store visit (once lockdown is over). It is a complimentary service where they look at your place (bring photos) and suggest themes and how you could position things. Free service without any pushy sales tactics so highly recommend.

      • The other advantage with Hemnes and Billy (in addition to being relatively timeless) is that heaps of people sell them 2nd hand. You can pick up a whole wall of 2nd hand Billy bookcases for the same price as 1 brand new from Ikea

Definitely stick to some simpler lines from Ikea tho, otherwise people know instantly that you've shopped there. It can be very difficult to style a room with Ikea without it looking like a particularly crappy Ikea showroom

Look carefully at the Measurements of the Spaces you have and the Dimensions of what is on your List.

Check out VR Apps so your can see what you buy will look like in the Room
    e.g. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/customer-service/mobile-apps/say-…

I reckon there will be a big 'end of lockdown' 'sale' once we are allowed out properly again. This should translate into decent discounts.

One thing you can do is pick what you want then get a total price at one store (eg Good Guys) then put a deposit down. If you see the same product for cheaper then get them to adjust the price or if you find a better model you can swap it out all before paying in full for delivery. Doesn't work as well for furniture but great for electrical.

    • this is interesting and I've never heard of this strategy before. Are they generally flexible on matching prices, including like 20% on ebay etc?

Also what is the benefit of putting down a deposit? Is it just to lock in products I like?

      • +1

Well it means that you lock in the discount because they have to put it on an invoice. Then they'll be more likely to help you with prices because they don't want to lose a sale worth thousands. You can even call the same store and have them accidentally beat their own prices by just asking what their best price is on a certain product then telling them you want that added to your invoice and have the other one taken off. The power is all yours.

Black Friday seems to have better sales than EOFY. EOFY sales seem to have been quite ordniary over the last few years.

We will be moving into our new home at the end of the year

If you make EOFY and/or Black Friday sales, you might need to take into account storage between then and when you move and also any additonal costs you might incur from having to move those items to your new place.

    • good point - though we dont really have any possessions currently so it shouldnt be too bad.

When I moved around before, I didn't have many possessions either and I would've been able to move everything in a few trips with a normal car.

But I had a fridge, bed frame and mattress that I had to move too so I had no choice, but to spend a few hundred bucks on a truck. Without those big items, I could've easily saved those few hundred bucks on the truck.

So that's what I was referring to. Buying one big item now might make things difficult later.

It depends on whether you're ok with 2nd hand, but you can get some frigging good deals if you look on Gumtree for furniture (wouldn't necessarily recommend for appliances). The furniture just does not hold its value, so you can get good quality leather couches for maybe $250, coffee tables are a dime a dozen, etc. I got an amazing rosewood dining table and chairs for $150, and i reckon it looks absolutely amazing, a real keepsake piece of furniture

Another option is to check out some of the sellers on ebay that sell factory seconds furniture - they're brand new but may have a nick in the corner. We got our 2x Freedom sofas for $500 total, reduced for $2000. Some of the actual stores will have that kind of stuff leftover in their back docks even

    • never thought of checking eBay - will definitely take a look. thanks heaps.

I think there's a seller called Jojaba or Jobaba or something that sells factory second stuff from Freedom and Lounges Plus etc. Not sure if you're in Sydney obviously

        • in sydney but just took a look and it seems like it is pickup only. That might be difficult with sofas..

            @raquethead111: My hatchback works wonders!

But they probably would deliver if you asked. Especially nowadays!

I would wait until you move in - boxing day sales may be an opportune time. If you buy too early, you start eating into your warranty time.
