[Solved] Looking for 38mm Apple Watch

My partner's Apple watch (38mm series 2) spontaneously had a cracked screen without any impact

I checked with Apple and they said it isn't covered by https://support.apple.com/en-au/screen-replacement-program-a…

They want $255 to replace the screen

I am looking for a replacement, I see they are only $319 new (Series 3 38mm) or I found this Series 1 for $169 delivered in good condition with 12 months warranty: https://shop.greengadgets.net.au/collections/smartwatches/pr…

Any suggestions on how to get the cheapest equivalent? (I think series 1 would be fine - mainly used for time and notifications)

Series 1 is about to loose update support (series 0 lost support this past ios update)
    get a S2 or better

    • thanks for letting me know

    • I'm a bit worried about series 2/3 again esp. if refurb as it could spontaneously crack again: https://support.apple.com/en-au/screen-replacement-program-a…

We have S3 and S4 in our house.
S3 was purchased launch day and has had no issues.

Saying that prior to purchase get the Serial # and check on the apple service site

if its a launch year model then it would be covered under the screen program
if its a non launch year model (as in its the model released when a newer one had come out) then they would have fixed the issues in regards to the screen problems.

if you get refurb from apple you can buy apple care if you are worried
Apple Care would give u 2 replacements of screen for i think its $99
You can also claim if you just break it or something

Thanks, the annoying thing is my partner is extra careful and has an Apple watch since they came out and never cracked the screen

  • Hey OP, did the screen pop out like the support article you linked?

Honestly, Apple Geniuses are the biggest PITA to deal with; I've gone so many times that now I've completely lost all hope in them.

When my S2 42mm died because the battery would no longer charge, they told me it would cost $349 to fix, when I only paid $480 for it… It was only after I told them I would take them to ACCC because it's a widespread issue and they're refusing to fix, then the guy got pissed off, didn't say anything and put it under a new category called "Quality Program (E1)".

Sometimes you really need to give them a push before they'll actually do something. Maybe it has something to do with store sell quotas? Might be worth getting a second opinion from another Genius.

    • Thanks. All the stores are closed at the moment so I sent it in for repair. They initially said via support that it would be covered but then sent me an email saying they want $255 because of “other damage”. I’ve quizzed them and nearly given up with how annoying they are - they’ve said the watch has the screen repair program issue - but the other damage in the middle of screen isn’t covered!?!? The outer damage caused the inner damage - so frustrating.

Oh that's a shame — my experience with online support is even worse than the store. It seems they run the support out of Singapore, and they have no idea what ACCC means so that might take even longer to process.

I had a MacBook Pro 2016 that wouldn't turn on after going to sleep and I had to supply so much information and videos before they finally agreed to refund me. It took me a few jumps up the ladder and finally to some senior manager, asking the question "Is your definition of a laptop, a computer that's not portable? Because that's what I have, a computer that cannot resume from sleep.".

Good luck OP, I hope you are able to get a repair!
