[AMA] "Essential" Worker at Macca's, Ask Me Anything!

During these rough times of COVID-19, the store I work at has died down significantly, whereas it'd be jam-packed with hungry business people on better days. Surprisingly (but also not surprising), suburban stores with drive-thru are so much more populated than my city store; resulting in the cutting down of shifts across all employees.

I've done Ask Me Anything discussion forums twice before, but it might be a suitable time to do it again.

Similar to the JobKeeper question above, do you feel lucky or not to be "Essential" during this period, considering it's just Maccas compared to being like a doctor or other essential services person? Would you rather be paid less but get a free holiday out of it? Or as mentioned above yeah, only health care workers or international students are getting all the freebies?

(or is that too risky to answer publicly for your own sake:P)

To see that restaurants are still essential surprises me, given that some countries such as the United Kingdom & New Zealand closed down their restaurants, with NZ only reopening very recently. I don't mind if I get paid less or more during this pandemic. Yes, I may have been cut down in hours; but it's all about knowing that I am contributing to feeding the community. This is what makes me the happiest at the end of a shift during these times. Not too clear why you mentioned international students receiving freebies from us, but they don't. There are only programs for health care workers with the free coffee/soft drink or cheeseburger.

knowing that I am contributing to feeding the community.

Ahh that warmed my heart. It says to me you are a good, down to earth, honest person. Very well done.
Sorry if that was off track a bit as I have no questions for you.

I probably should have included the other bits you said,

    • Some might even say contributing to slowly killing the community. Covid will come and go but heart disease and diabetes are here to stay and grow. Neg away

Why doesn't all handlers wear Masks and gloves?

  • I had a very bad experience yesterday.
I ordered some fries. I was waiting and i saw them make the fries fresh. There was no salt in their salt spreader, so this young lady decided to pour salt from a lock n lock box and chuck a whole splash. I pondered.. but i thought that she knew what she was doing. When i got home to have the fries, it was too salty and i threw them away. Sometimes i just find that people cant careless about quality because its not them who are eating it. Does this happen often?

According to superstition, spilling salt is bad luck and throwing a pinch over your shoulder reverses that bad luck

YOu should throw the chips back over your shoulder at the young lady.

      • (dont do it,, im only joking)

No, it's simply caused by utter laziness. Never would be the right thing to do, and no, she wouldn't have known what she was doing. If this went on for her other batches, guess who's getting complaints!

  • Will the 'Name It' (Backyard) burger return?

  • Do you work for a franchisee or corporate store? And are you and your employees eligible for Jobkeeper. Thanks for your service :)

    • Franchised store. My store falls below the 30% fall in turnover, so eligible employees would get it. Aus Government recently updated their Jobkeeper eligibility criteria, so I no longer receive the payments as I am under 18 years old.

  • Why do the deluxe burgers say they come with grilled onion but they always come with no onion at all?

    • I'll be honest, grilled onions are rarely ever used. Some may be cooked, but they dry out quickly and will be left in the UHC for a while. Definitely wouldn't go for the grilled onions unless they're less than five minutes old.

  • Has any staffs been test for COVID-19?

      not at my store.

    • Not really, but when you first start working; these sounds definitely ring in your head through your deep sleep cycle.

  • why is buy a coffees at mccafe seem like a roulette, sometime good other times crap?

    • +3

horrible training. Many stores like to go "watch the person doing Coffees and copy them". It depends on the store, but some baristas I know at my local store make every coffee as if it's a flat white.

  • Did you know about the Facebook group griping about having to use the app to count coffees for a free coffee?
I admit I have forgotten heaps when ordering in person you can't get a stamp… Definitely missed out on free coffees by now :(

    • no :(

  • Do you still accept the tafe MacDonald discount cards from 30 years ago, which don't have an expiration date. Yellow card umm get a soft drink with any purchase, white card, get a small cheeseburger with any purchases. Lost those cards like 20 years ago. These were also store specific, and over decades stores can move or close.

    • Never heard of it, so I'm assuming we don't - given that the card is from 30 years ago.

    • If you're talking about 'Student Edge', then yes. I got a small coke with my purchase of over $3 not long ago.

  • Are supermarket staff considered essential workers and thus get the freebies you are offering?

    • +1

So you're implying that all essential workers should get the same benefits as healthcare workers? And no, they do not.

  • Do staff/ managers (either secretly or otherwise) despise customers for asking for free stuff they are 'entitled' to - seniors coffees, health care worker free drinks, emails from managers offering free food when an order was stuffed up etc.

And I know you don't do drive through, but is it annoying when people don't explain the freebie/ coupon until they get to the payment window?

  • I remembered when I was a kid ppl would have drive thru VIP stickers on their windshield.. I guess this isnt a thing no more since theres the rewards section within the mobile app.

  • Who supplies the Beef patties and Chicken? The name of the supplier.

    • +1

Ingham is the supplier for the chicken, not so sure about beef.

  • Why are McFlurrys only $2 at the moment?
maybe it just my local place

    • they have always been that price?

  • Question 1. Multi-part (5 marks)

When you use a reward via the kiosk that gives a freebie or a discount does the store care? Do employees pay attention to the discounted items? Do they ever check to see if a deal is for new users only? Do they care if you use more than one voucher, having to do 2 separate orders?

It's just that when I get a single "classic" item I seem to get attitude, but when I order a "deluxe" item I get treated with respect. Maybe it's because I look proud when I order deluxe or it's in my mind.

Question 2. Why are kiosks in my stores always out of paper? Even in the morning, day after day. Do they fit so little that the employees just give up restocking them?

Question 3. Why would the breakfast burger not be on the all-day menu? What's so special or difficult about it? Can't we all just get along?

Question 4. Why don't the rewards ever offer the items from the "new" range? Isn't that the idea of promotions?

Question 5. I know staff aren't trained in kiosks at all, but why do all businesses - not just McDonald's - only show the discounted price at the end. So annoying when I buy 5 kiwi fruit at Coles as well. This is just a rant.

And can I ask them to swap for another one if it comes with hard egg?

Other times its over done and super dry

  • Do frontline healthcare workers get a free cheeseburger?

  • why have McChicken burgers gone to crap? they are in the same price range as the BigMac & Quarter Pounder yet every time i get a McChicken now its basically the same tiny chicken patty they gave in those $2 chicken and cheese burgers (which were smaller), generally is a little bit stale and worst of all, it has barely any letteuce and the tinniest amount of mayo added to it.

looks nothing like the Mcchicken burger that used to be sold yet cost the same price.

and dont get me started on the price of mc flurrys..
