Which Credit Card? My AmEx Velocity Frequent Flyer Is Ending

Hi,

I'm looking for a new credit card and hoping some people could help. I've looked at the forum post and the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_guide but I haven't really seen a card that suits.

I normally spend 4-5k a month on my card and connect it through google pay and i'll pay off the amount every month. I don't need any balance transfer. Ideally I'm looking for low annual cost and some sort of frequent flyer points. I did have the ANZ Black within the last 12 months too.

Which card would be a good one to apply for? I looked at the Comm Bank one but don't have a netbank account would need to get one at the bank (tried calling but stayed on wait).

Thanks,
Q

How is the Velocity card ending?

note: as per Amex, you can switch to another one of their products too, try calling them

  • Is it ending?

    • No.

Source: I have one and haven't received any communications about it bar what bdl posted. You can still earn points, you can't just redeem them. You can't transfer Membership Rewards points to the Velocity program either

    Velocity or Qantas? Or other?

  • Sorry, i meant ending the 12 month first year and I don't want to pay 4XX yearly cost, especially as I don't know if I'll be flying anytime soon.

You can try calling them and switching it to the $0 lowest tier one for the time being, if you want.. then search for a new card as per your OP :)

  • Did you end up converting your Velocity points to Krisflyer? If you did then look at Amex Explorer to keep earning KF points.

  • Which FF program do you want points with? Velocity (not knowing what the future will hold) or Qantas? Are you after an FF point when min. spend is fulfilled promo or you just want to earn points as you spend?

You could go outside Amex since they require 18 months before you can be eligible for their sign up promotions again. I would not go near Commbank for any sort of credit card as they don't really give any perks outside of free travel insurance and points earn (their Platinum card is a joke for the annual fee you pay — you basically get nothing for the amount you pay).

Check out this page if you're considering moving to Qantas FF, seems to be a good summary of what promos are on right now. Seems as though the HSBC, Qantas Money and Macquarie cards will net you ~20,000 points all with annual fees of under $100.

Might be a bit early to jump ship from Velocity. Not saying that's what you're going to do, just an observation.

  • If you like Amex, look at the Westpac bundles. They won't affect future eligiblity for bonus points via the regular Amex range. Also, I don't know if it still works but I applied for a Westpac mastercard before getting the Amex to go with it and didn't have any annual fee on both cards for the first year =)

Otherwise most banks do Qantas cards or their own version of reward point systems. There are way too many products to narrow it down lol

To expand your horizons outside Qantas, I would suggest looking at the St George Amplify Platinum or Signature Credit Card that enables you to focus on earning Krisflyer miles to redeem on Singapore Airlines who are fantastic! Low taxes too!

Points earning is unlimited, descent earn rate of .825 per dollar, half annual fee $49 or $139 in first year to receive the initial points and then $99 or $279 to receive total 50k or 100k Krisflyer miles respectively.

I do find St George hard to secure credit since the lending credit changes across the banking system so ensure you’re in the best financial situation and obtain credit card closure letters to prove what maybe incorrect on your credit file.
