Optus NBN Setup Confusion

Hello fellas,

I have Optus broadband at my house. Recently I applied for NBN FTTC. The technician visited and installed new NBN box to the wire without connecting/setting it up with my existing hardware. Presently I have 3 gadgets, optus modem, Wifi router (TP-Link C5400) and NBN new box.

Can someone please explain to me what I have to do now?

I mean where do I have to plug the NBN device (ether cable)? in my modem or in my wifi router?
Do I need my wifi router only or I also need my existing modem for the nbn setup?
Pretty much confused how to make it work, please guide.

Cheers.

  • NBN Box > Wifi Router. I assume the Optus Modem was from your pre-NBN connection?

    • edit… unless they gave you one of the newer 4G backup devices, which means the modem/router they supplied should replace your existing wifi router.

      • Thank you for your quick reply. Previously Optus provided me with the normal modem and wifi router with my broadband, now I shifted to nbn, so they provided with additional nbn white box, I don't know should I throw my existing modem and connect new white nbn box directly to my wifi router (TP Link c5400) or all 3 devices required for the internet to work?

You plug your Router directly to the NBN Box using Ethernet cable. A modem is no longer required.

        • From the looks of it — white NBN box goes to the white Optus Gateway, which should have all your Wifi functionality built in. Once you have that working, you can chose whether you keep the Optus gateway or your old Wifi router. Both should do the same job, but one may do it better.

  • Have you had 2 appointments? I had 1 form nbn technician and 1 from optus technician. From what you have provided, you haven't had the 2nd appointment?

    • Yes I guess not, I am not sure if Optus will send a 2nd technician or not.

  • One of the White devices with the NBN logo on it, is the NBN NTD for FTTC. You just connect your wifi router to the NBN NTD.

  • Most probably the resource is NBN co. Why don't you head to https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/fibre-to-t….
There some explainer videos and PDF documents. You will need to do a bit of reading.

Is your NBN provided by Optus as well?

    • Yes it is. Thanks for the guide, I read this guide before, the term wifi gateway is always confusing my mind. I have wifi router and normal modem, I don't have wifi gateway thing. That's why I asked the community that do I plug my optus nbn box with my modem or with my wifi router directly or I need to buy wifi "gateway" thing.

Hi Freeza, the connection to the NCD (NBN Connection Box) is Ethernet. You can even connect to that directly with your computer. However, you will need some additional information from Optus to set up your connection. That will typically be a user name and password (your account credentials).

You will definitely be able to use your TP-Link C5400 to connect to the NBN. Use a network cable (ethernet cable) and connect the Internet port on the TP-Link to the Gateway port on the NBN Connection Box. Again you will need your Optus account credentials to set up your modem.

You may also be able to use the existing Optum Modem depending on the model number. You are welcome to place your model number and I can confirm that for you.

        Hope this helps!

  • Update: Optus technician came and installed NBN setup. But the problem I am facing now is my internet is dropping in every 20-30 minutes for a couple of seconds and then coming back up. My wifi is not disconnecting, just the network is getting dropped. Any advice for me, please?
Optus technician came and connected nbn white box to my wifi router (TP-Link C5400) directly!
I talked with optus service team and they said they cannot help because I am not using their provided modem -_-.

    • There can be various sources to cause this. Yeah, Optus want you to use their provided router. Unfortunately Optus aren't that great with support with diagnosing problems. Do you have many telephone ports in your house? I know there are there posts on Whirlpool talking about issues like this.
