Underrated areas of Sydney to commute via train from?

Hey guys

Looking at moving to Sydney (eventually… work) and would love to hear your thoughts on sleeper suburbs. I know some areas of Sydney pretty well, the inner west and the sutherland shire. But a lot of it is a mystery to me.

I just want to be a short (30-45 min) train trip to work (CBD ish) and be able to walk or cycle to the shops. Can't do an apartment cause I got a big dawg.

Been living in Marrickville for a year or so, no complaint so far especially if you enjoy Asian food. Got a car but go to CBD by train everyday and it's a 25 min ride unless there's interruption. My apt is right next to Marrickville station though so you've probably gotta look around for houses. Newtown is just a 15 min bus/car ride for more food option/entertainment.

  • I used to live in Ingleburn. 30 minutes express train to international airport and 45 mins to the CBD =). Quiet area.

I haven't been there in 15 years but it used be a real sh!th0le

        Still looks to be.

We drove down there recently to investigate the area for potential purchase.

        Just couldn't shake that vibe…

        • It's a little too close to Minno.

      • It can be rough if you're in the wrong part lol.

where i lived, i never felt unsafe even walking around at night.

    Budget?

    • Not happening and time soon so no budget in question. Will be dual income no kids so not the bottom of the market but not the top either.

Around Erskineville, Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville but you are looking at $800-$1k/week for 2 bedrooms and a car space.

My place in Erskineville was renting for $1350/week before I bought it in 2018. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 car spaces. It's probably cheaper now

Sydney is pretty diverse. Do you like beaches? Or cafes and restaurants? Do you want a bigger block of land or a townhouse? A villagey suburb or an apartment graveyard?

    • Apartment graveyard?! I love apartments :(

Cafes are good, beaches are good. Don't need a big block of land, just something with a bit of outside space. Can't be an apartment bc dog.

Most important factor would be the walkability and reasonable train commute.

Have a look also which train lines are more crowded. It's nicer to have a seat ;)

Ashfield. Ten minute non stop trains to Redfern and Central. And Waverton… lots of apartments but low rise mostly. great parks Harbour walks, 12 minutes to Town Hall. And in 4 years Crows Nest. Two stops to Town Hall once the metro opens.

Oatley? Bangor? Reasonably priced and relatively quiet.

If your looking for underrated areas with a decent rain commute AND you mentioned that beaches, cafe and some land for you dog is good I'd suggest looking into Kogarah/Arncliffe/Rockdale area.

    • Train line is good and you would be looking at ~ 30 minute commute
    • Lots of cafes and places to eat in the area
    • Close to Hurstville Westfields
    • Not too far from the eastern suburbs/beaches
    • Also close to brighton beach - not that nice but it is close
    • Close to the airport too if that's worth anything
