It only Takes 2 Days to Get a new Passport in Victoria

Hello,

Not really a deal, but you only need 2 days to get a new passport in Victoria. So please, don't pay for the fast track option to have your passport in less than 2 weeks.

at the moment, but thats for the tip.

don't pay for the fast track option to have your passport in less than 2weeks.

Well considering the entire worlds borders are just about all 'shut down' I don't see too many people needing to pay the 'rush rush' fees as they have a flight/travel coming up.

BTW Where are you going OP? :)

We should get a free extension on our passports for however long this lasts 😂

Please don't start this thought process; it will be never-ending about all the things that people have, and use sporadically, and that they now think need to have an extended period of validity.

In your current passport, which I assume is valid for 10 years, what is the sum of the duration of all of your trips to date?

Ohhh it was a joke, as noted by the emoji. I definitely don’t think it’s a viable option.

But if you really want to know, my current passport was issued in late Dec and I was away for all of Jan, so actually my use rate is pretty high considering travel started becoming harder from Feb and impossible in March.

And to be fair, in Vic, myki passes were able to be paused for non use, so it is possible.

            @jjjaar:

Those examples all have 'virtual' expiry dates on them, so yes easy as to extend.

Passports have a printed expiry date, just like drivers licences etc, so to extend them, would mean reissuing the passport, at great cost.

The fact is out of the 10 year period, most passports sit idle and never used more than a few weeks a year at best on average.

@JimmyF: Once again, it was a joke and I never thought it was a viable option.

@jjjaar: so I see… So I see, but you did say

                so it is possible

the fact is its not that simple like it is with your other examples.

      • I paid $150 in March for my son's passport for a planned overseas trip in April.

Had we travelled in March, his old passport would have been fine to use!

        Very annoying.

It took about a week to get it in March.

Had you travelled in March, you would have been most likely caught up in the travel restrictions, mandatory quarantine, etc., or in a worse case, have contracted the virus.

@GG57: Good point. Was going to Japan so no more dangerous than being at home.

    • Not going anywhere. Did it for a newborn as it makes life easier. + had too much free time

      • I'm curious, is there a photo of the baby on it? Can't see that photo even being recognisable when it is current, let alone in a years time

        • +2

Yes that's why Child Passports are only valid for 5 years at a time.
IMO I would have waited OP cause you ain't gonna be travelling any time soon so just 'wasting' the validity period my opinion

          • @KBZ: I have a big flight centre voucher with a 6 months validity …

  • Where did you submit your application? Post office?
Mine has been processing over a week and I still haven't heard anything.
Also is there anywhere I can track progress for my passport?

    • Yes, post office !

Just got it today. Took a little over a week (which is amazing, because I needed it before 3 weeks).
Thanks for the heads-up otherwise I would have paid priority :D

Someone else send me a message to tell me he waited one week. Looks like one week is the new expected delay :-)

  • I had mine prior to lockdown and somehow lost it…good to know it's a quick process to get one! But feels bad forking out $300. Def lost my OzB badge :( Knowing my luck it'll appear the moment the new one arrives.
