Australian Visa Expiring

Hi guys,

Wonder if someone could give me some advice. A family member that has come to Australia a few months ago is trying to get back to their country and because of covid-19 he's been stuck here as European airports are closed. They have open flights back in early June however his tourist Visa expires a couple of weeks before that. Would anyone know what the best way to go about it is? Reapplying for a Visa is $400 that we currently can't afford. We are really trying to do things legal.

Many thanks

Contact the immigration office and they'll tell you what his options are.

Definitely don't want to screw this one up and risk an exclusion for a few years!

    • i thought you said execution…. maybe in north korea

check if the current visa has a no further stay imposed on it.
if it does, apply for a waiver. then apply for a new tourist visa - $135.
if not, apply for a new tourist visa - $135.

You can also contact your country's embassy or consulate in Australia.

Did they book the return knowing their visa was running out before the flight?

    • The flight back was booked for 3 weeks ago which had to cancel as the airports in Europe were shut and some borders closed.

They are pretty good with people stuck from covid19 at the moment so just apply

Australian government has stated that for people who are stuck in Australia under such circumstances to contact the department of immigration.

It is what it is… What did the immigration office say when you asked them?

    • What did the immigration office say when you asked them?

      "We're sending a van around…"

free trip home though and saves that $400 visa fee ;)

    • What did the immigration office say when you asked them?

"QUESTION 5? DID YOU READ IT? ARE YOU BRINGING ANY FOOD INTO THIS COUNTRY?"

"I don't know, my mum packed my bag"

  • Reapplying for a Visa is $400 that we currently can't afford.

$400 is the just beginning. Medical checkups (if needed) costs around another 300.

Contact the foreign country's consulate / embassy. They do organize repatriation flights from time to time. They will have those info.

But $400, or the high chance of getting infected in Europe, I think $400 is worth the price. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. We might go for a bridging visa E after the current visa expires which lets him stay lawful until travel arrangements are settled. And there's no cost to it

So which visa are you applying?

What you can do when you have this visa
stay lawfully in Australia until a decision is made on your substantive visa application

  • You can apply 408 visa for free.

The visa lets you "remain in Australia if you have no other visa options and are unable to depart Australia due to COVID-19 travel restrictions".

    More details here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-li…

    • there is other option - applying new tourist visa.

You can't afford $400?. Serious question.

    • Not when you are living paycheck to paycheck when on top of that my company has reduced my working hours to half. Tough times.
