Baby Monitor - Remote Access

Hi All,

Looking for some help here !

I am after a baby monitor which can be used via app remotely ( When away from home via internet) and also to be used inside the home. The camera needs to be portable so we can move it from the cot to a different place.

I have tired to do some search and came across cameras from Oricom but dont think they have this functionality

Could anyone please recommend any baby monitors which would suit my requirement.

Thanks in advance.

  • Just remember to buy a trusted brand. There are many cheap ones out there that are very insecure and would allow anyone to watch and talk your child.

    • Thank You, Appreciate your advice :)

Lol, they all would be insecure if you hook them up to your wifi.

  • any wireless security camera would do.

reolink argus 2 is battery powered, and has push notifications.

    • We were also after a portable 3/ 5 inch video monitor inside the house .. Would i be able to have an option with Reolink Argus 2?

        no, its a phone app.

  • We bought an Arlo that had this functionality, I'd avoid it. Found it very unreliable. Haven't really looked at alternatives since that.

  • We're considering a TP Link Kasa camera.

  • I've used the DLink baby camera as well as Arlo Baby Cam. Both had their pros and cons but neither was too reliable in the long run.

The Arlo was better but keep in mind that there's a few seconds of lag when using it.

I think there are some other newer models I have seen at Baby Bunting from baby camera companies (rather than technology companies) which have traditional baby monitor but also a way to stream the video. This might work better but I've never tried.

  • If you are worried about someone accessing your camera, I would recommend against one with wifi. I doubt there would be many if any on the market that would be very secure.

    • Asking as we have one - how is it insecure?. We had to enter password for app to access wifi. Is this not secure enough? Would some need to be standing within range of our wifi? Or are you suggesting it could be accessed remotely?

      • Just saying that I doubt a baby monitor would be very secure, when was it last updated, there are many ways something can be compromised, not just a password. It might be fine, but it also might not be. It’s about the whole network it has been put on, not just the device its self. Do you use that password anywhere else ? Is it being stored / transmitted in plain text or encrypted ?

        • So you’re saying it’s only as secure as our wifi network… I’m confident enough in that. We use our network for internet banking etc so have done everything we can to make it secure. I can’t imagine life at home without wifi or equivalent, so I guess the camera just fits in with that.

          • @morse: Yes and no, can you access the webcam from the internet ? If yes, you have just opened a new hole / attack vector into your home network.

And yes a lot of corporate attacks begin in someone’s home network. They gain access there first then start moving towards your corporate network.

Many people use the same passwords for personal and corporate uses. But is not the only way they could get access to your corporate network after accessing your home network.

    • I’ve got the unit from baby bunting.

      It’s a bit meh.

I think that it’s secure, without looking it up, pretty sure that it’s WPA security, which is good enough for this enterprise WIFI tech.

The camera is configured via the app to some cloud hosting server. Enter a unique key to use either the monitor unit and/or app to get the video stream.

Anybody who wants to hack my WPA key has earned the right to see me get changed in front of my camera.

My biggest issue was that when I tried to pan the camera with the monitor unit the wifi signal from the monitor to the AP wasn’t strong enough to allow the camera to move. I installed an additional access point and it came good, but I was surprised by how strong the signal had to be for it to work.

Do not recommend because of the signal strength issues.

We have this one from Kmart and find it good https://www.kmart.com.au/product/full-hd-wi-fi-indoor-camera… just had to put a sticker over the white/blue light that shines a bit too brightly in the dark. We use the app on our phone iPad to view it.

out of curiosity, what's the reason behind buying/using these?

Can check in on baby whilst they are sleeping (or not sleeping) in another room e.g. just stirring or needing assistance. I like to just check in on my bub sometimes without waking him, he does some pretty funny things, I’ve got some great screenshots and video grabs from the camera. You can also listen to sound so you know if your baby has woken up if you are outside. We used in conjunction with a breathing monitor early on that would alert use if there had been no movement for 20secs, thankful that alarm never went off.

In addition to above, Im a first time parent as usual paranoid about a lot of things.. I really wish to see the baby when i am away from home .. In normal circumstances i am away from home two days in a month for work !

  • Kodak Cherish C525

    • Hey Freakapotamus - I am considering getting the C225. How do you rate your unit? How good is the battery life on the parent unit?

    • Hi Freakapotamus, we're thinking of getting the C525 unit. Any cons so far? I hear night vision isn't the best and sound as well. Would be keen to hear your review especially since its not cheap

  • @Eyetie, If you haven't shared the code yet I would be really keen as I quite like the CuboFit and would like to get one for our bub that is coming next month.
