Air Purifier Recommendations and Reviews

Hi Guys,
Recently my partner went into hospital for a few days and noticed while she was in there, her asthma was non existent, compared to the 1-2 puffs from her puffer she needs to take each day when she's at home. We also noticed that when we went overseas and stayed in an air filtered hotel room, again her asthma was non existent. So i am on the hunt for a purifier that can do a similar job. Our bedroom is approx 6m x 4m. The two that have kind of stood out for me are the Xiaomi purifier 3, and the InovaAir E8 (as they e7 would be too small in effective range for our bedroom). However there is a huge gap in price of these two units ($250 - $795).
Has anyone had either of these units for a while and noticed any real difference in air quality or reduced athsma/allergy symptoms? I did notice somewhere someone stating one small issue with the xiaomi is the unit will aim to get the air down to a pm 2.5 of 75 and then slows down after that, and that there is no way to change that setting. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

  • Xiaomi purifier

Have these, they are great. You just need to run them in manual mode, as the auto mode slows the fan down way too much. But this is no different to any of the others, ie you pick a fan speed.

    • Oh thanks JimmyF, so you can just run them at full speed in manual mode for max performance? I'd assume the only downside to this would be the filters would wear out quicker. May i ask which model/s you have?

      • I've got the 2S, and you can run them in manual flat out, but normally I run mine at a lower speed, as they run all the time, so don't need to be turning the air over so often. That said if I need to I can just open the app and increase the speed.

        • Yeah, makes sense. Once the air quality is at a good level, you not need it to run flat out to maintain that level.

            Correct

    • Not OP but also interested. Where do you get replacement filters from?

      • Where do you get replacement filters from?

Xiaomi purifier filters can be gotten from a few places, I normally get mine from Kogan, often they are on sale for $39, normal price is $59 including shipping.

So when I seen them cheap, I pickup a spare :)

  • We have the InovaAir E20. Just look at the specs between the 2 brands and work out what you want from your system. We have noticed a drop in dust particles on surfaces, so they do work. As we have it in a large room and at the lowest setting, it's difficult to gauge specifically the effectiveness of the unit. It does make more noise at higher levels. For us it's just good to have as 1 is an atshma sufferer and the other one has allergies.

    • Yeah, i noticed the specs between the two arent all that far apart, mainly build quality and longevity being differences. I wonder if its best to go with the cheaper model and see if that works, and if not, sell it for a $100 loss and upgrade to an InovaAir. Thanks for your imput!

    Philips Series 6000.

Amazing unit and the detection system works well.

Get a reliable air quality monitor - http://www.dylosproducts.com/ornodcproair.html

I did, then I tested a heap of units myself. "Retail renting" basically, I'd buy and test how fast the air was cleaned up.

The Xiaomi purifier worked out to be the best and the cheapest. There are some really amazing and cheap purifiers available in the US/Eu but not here. A lot of the fancy brands here are just ripping people are. Air purifiers are just a fan and a couple of filters. Besides greed there is no justification for some of the insane prices.

    • Which Xiaomi did you end up getting?

      • The Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier. I dont know what number, 2 or 3? I think theyre up to 4 now. Its all the same shit, maybe some differences in whether they can connect to your phone.

  • I got a cheap one off ebay with a hepa filter and run it every once in a while + got a miele vacuum with a hepa filter used as the exhaust filter as well, especially if you have carpet and don't have a hepa filter whenever you vacuum its gonna exhaust particles all over the place.

  • I have very similar asthma related issues; at home with 3 cats my breathing goes wildly bad and reliant on a puffer - then I fly out of the country and day one, breathing is normal. Any doctors out there they want to diagnose me over the internet? Will go see my doctor once again and he'll tell me to get rid of the cats first and clean daily.

  • This is for an idea. Price point between the two extremes you presented.

If anyone can vouch, it will be appreciated as I am looking too.

One thing I like about this is Costco satisfaction guarantee.

  • Has anyone had any experience or opinions regarding Kmart's air purifiers?

  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3H vs Ionmax ION420?

  • Measure your air quality. Then get a good whole-house purifier. Much better than an in-room unit.

I did a write up about how I use this to manage my asthma here: https://dhanapalan.com/take-a-deep-breath-and-cough/

  • Has anyone had experience with the Philips 2000? We are considering this or the Inovaair E8. There is about a $300 difference between the two. Had also considered the Xiaomi 3H however Choice rated the VOC filtering of the Xiaomi at 25% versus the Philips 200 at 60%. The Inovaair wasn't reviewed though. Love to hear peoples thoughts on all these models please
