How often are you using your AMEX? (has AMEX acceptance improved?)

Hi all,

I'm looking at re-applying for an AMEX which I cancelled a year ago, and was wondering whether the acceptance has improved over the past year.

What % of your total send is able to be put through your Amex card? (with the remainder needing cash or Mastercard/VISA)

In the process of choosing which credit card to signup for, and an up to date pulse check on AMEX acceptance will be helpful

Thanks

Didn't know people still used Amex outside USA. Is it for the points or something?

    • Yeah for points, they used to be really lucrative before they changed their points earn about a year ago.

For me personally, the value is there is the merchant acceptance is high

I guess you’re not aware of the Amex Statement Credits?

JB Hi-Fi is still the only major retailer that slugs a surcharge for Amex that I can think of.

      • United petrol too, and I think one of the other petrol chains, but I can’t remember which one.
Some government departments, and my local council charge more for Amex.

        • Probably Caltex. My local one surcharges. BP depends on the shop itself; three in one postcode don't surcharge, one in another postcode does

  • majority of purchase for me is with amex and I use where possible (providing no merchant fee is passed directly to me as a fee). The card I have has no annual fee and a small interest free period, but I also gain points. The rest I just use on a MC or Visa). I believe acceptance has somewhat improved with less merchants charging a direct fee.

  • some areas dont accept amex or have amex surcharges in cafes. YMMV.
amex thinks you have to be sexy to use their cards, extra sexy if you have their target offer. They charge the stores extras.

You will get the store comments when amexers are on popular statements credits.
You will have eyeballs rolls when amexers with 15-20 cards holding the queue on peak hours or weekends.
Saw a queue from the counter to the main door of the shopping center.

  • For where I go (e.g. supermarkets, petrol stations, fast food places, online stores) AMEX is accepted pretty widely. This is in Sydney.

In Melbourne, even my local fish and chips place accepts AMEX now through a CBA EFTPOS terminal.

Acceptance definitely seems to have improved since I last had an AMEX (around 2016).

  • I use amex at the larger companies and use my debit at independent stores. Let the larger companies pay the amex fees lol

Or just use your amex through paypal - works most of the time (but sometime they take amex away as an option) and usually no fees.

    • This is how I pay for stuff from JB Hi-Fi, NRMA and other various companies who refuses/surcharge Amex, but not via PayPal

  • You cancelled a year ago?
Maybe make sure you cancelled 18 months ago and ensure you’re eligible for a sign-up bonus.

  • Is Aldi still not accepting?
