GPS Tracker recommendations.

Hello!

I am after a GPS tracker to hide on some earth moving equipment, not having ever had or used one before I would love some recommendations, advice and bargains too if you have come across any.

Thanks.

  • What brand you using? Cat and Komatsu have onboard tracking if you're using the newer models

    • It doesn’t have onboard tracking unfortunately!

  • I've used one of these setup to report to my own server, but you can use the one that it is preconfigured for.

    eBay TK-319L

    • what server side software are you using?

      • +2

        I'm using Traccar

        • Thanks, might check it out

          • @JimmyF: It is pretty good - has an API that I am using for an external mapping site as well.

One downside I have found is that it doesn't natively support SSL, so I have it going through a proxy on my Synology NAS.

        • What a great find! Thanks!

  • If they are remote setup equipment (ie: out in the boonies), we use Spot Trace trackers on all of our field machines. They work better on earth moving machines that are/can be located outside mobile phone reception range as they use the satellite network to communicate, not GSM. They don't work quite as well in urban environments thought with all the cell tower noise.

A lot of it depends on your budget and your coverage requirements.

  • Romera 2 device by Digital Matters is great, very sturdy and good for outside.

  • You can do cheap DIY from Jaycar, eBay, etc. but you need to manage them yourselves, very troublesome if you have a lot of units and especially if you need to be held accountable, e.g. why isn't it tracking, why can't I see it, is the SIM card working, did the rain last night break it, etc.
    If it's for a business/company, I recommend https://www.intellitrac.com.au/ - great UI and support.

  • Thanks everyone, we only need one! We aren’t remote, just rural, planning on dry-hiring and it’s just to make sure we can find it if stolen and to make sure it’s only being used where it’s been hired to use etc.
