Paying Import Tax on My Own Item?

Hi all,

Recently sent a package insured for 20K AUD with couriers please. Package arrived quickly in the U.S, after that, radio silence. Calling their customer service almost everyday for 10 days and little to no updates. Package was sent back because they were "unable to reach receiver" (extra details were sent promptly when requested the night before being sent back, though everything needed was provided beforehand).

My package got sent back with DHL and I found out through them that it was being sent back, not by couriers please. I had to pay import tax on my own package, $212 (not $2000, paper with value had been folded and the total wasn't showing).

Couriers Please are only refunding the shipping costs, not the insurance costs or import tax. Legally, can I get them back?

TIA

Can you actually insure meth ?

  • It doesn't make sense for you to pay GST.

On the importing by post or mail website it says

If you take no action within 30 days of receiving a First Notice then Australia Post may return the goods to the sender

If you didn't pay for the import GST who does your parcel get sent back to??

Do you happen to have a receipt showing you already paid GST in Australia before you exported it?

    • It was with DHL and I needed the package so I paid it. I'm happy enough that they thought it was insured for $2000 & not $20,000.

There is a 'returned goods' exemption for duty & GST (most commonly used when you send something overseas to get repaired), but that would normally be sorted before you pay it. Not sure how you go about getting that refunded once you've already paid tho…

Shouldnt have agreed to pay it, now you are going to have to go through their support process. Contact DHL and get a refund.
