How to Deal with a Dusty Room?

Just moved into a new place in the inner west of Sydney and my room is extremely dusty. I use a Dyson to vacuum every 3 or 4 days but I still find large amounts of dust around my room - it gathers on any surface and clumps in balls on the floor.

I've cleaned the dust filter in the air-conditioner and try to dust every other day but i'm at a lost for what else I can do to help minimise the issue.

I suffer allergies and, aside from the issues that's causing, it's unsightly and makes me feel like i'm living in an unclean room.

Any ideas on what steps I can take to help with this?

  • Considered the use of an air filter or dehumidifier? Sounds like a good idea esp with allergies.

  • Carpets dry/steam cleaned

That's a great tip but the room has hardwood floors, no carpets anywhere in the house

Have you lives with hard floors previously? If only carpet, you might be surprised that there is probably less dust in your new place. It’s just out to see rather than hiding in the carpet.

First time I lived with mostly hard floors I was surprised how many dust bunny’s appeared.

checked for gaps at the windows?

    • Kingsville's comment is probably the most appropriate. Check for what is allowing external air to get inside the room, this could be gaps to doors and windows, ducted ventilation, gaps in timber flooring or ceiling, etc.
Cat's / dogs etc also carry a lot of dust around.
You mention it's only your room though, so what about the rest of the house?

      • i have this issue in my kitchen with neighbours cigarette smoke coming in daily and all windows/balcony closed. How do you fix this?

Put out their ciggies with a hose

          • @cheaplee: I like where you are going with this, why didnt i think of that…

        • Wait for them to die of cancer?

          If it is an apartment

Have you asked your neighbours, nicely, if they might find somewhere to smoke that is away from your property?

          • @try2bhelpful: Yes and even put a bylaw in place that prevents them from doing so, put up signs on every floor and common area and they still do nothing.

            • @sagrules: Take it to the body corporate, again, and see if they will talk to the owner directly. Unfortunately some people are just dicks.

You might want to see if there are gaps the smoke is coming through to see if you can seal them off. Maybe turn on your exhaust fan to see if you can draw some of it out that way. Maybe an air purifier. Just some suggestions. Best of luck with this. It is an appallingly selfish habit between the stench and the litter. When you get in a lift with a smoker they just reek. God knows what their apartment must be like.

  • Xiaomi 3H air purifier will help

  • What about other rooms in the same house ?

I found out that my Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum preforms better than the Dyson on hardwood floors.

  • Robo vacuum - otherwise you will have to vacuum manually everyday.
They're not cheap though, it would be an investment.

You have a ghost that is creating dust. It wants you out of the house. Check to see if anyone was slain in the house or if the ghost has some unfinished business. You can attempt to talk to the dead or just enlist the service of a ghost hunter.

  • As said above.. Xiaomi robot vacuum, even first gen, running every day makes sure zero dust bunnies in my place. I have hardwood floors and am asthmatic so its a god send.

  • That's probably the reason why the previous tenant moved out.
Check the gaps on doors, windows, ceiling exhaust in laundry and bathroom.
Do you have draught stopper on your main door?
Can you take some photos of the clumps? The dust must have been accumulating for quite a while for it forms balls and there must be strong wind flowing into your room.
What's the situation outside like? You first need to know if it comes from inside or outside.
Have you tried not going out for a few days and close all windows?

  • Do you live on a main street?

I suffered through this for a while. I had to buy an air purifier, but now I'm living somewhere else. Run your finger along the window sills, is it very dusty?

  • InovaAir air purifier.
