Help Choosing Tablet with Stylus

Hi guys,
I hope you guys are keeping yourself safe and entertained.

I need guidance in choosing a tablet with stylus - mainly for 7yo to do homework and some drawing to help him learn drawing basics.

I am inclined towards iPad Air but open to any suggestions. Budget is no issue upto 1500 but personally I am more comfortable with 600'ish package.

iPad air with pen going to cost around 900 I guess.

Personally I would prefer some big tablet that comes with stylus as factory default.

Thanks in advance guys and stay safe.

UPDATE :
Based on suggestions and one sided poll results, I am going to buy 7th gen iPad 10.5 inch with 1st gen pen from officeworks this Sunday.

518 + 145 = $663 which is sweet package for me.

Thanks alot awesome people for your valuable suggestions and experiences.
Cheers.

Cheers,
Ash

Excuse my ignorance, but why can't a 7 year old do homework and learn to draw with paper and pencil?

    • The school is running all homework via online apps. Sometimes ut is too much of hassle to print out all those sheets, let them draw, rescan and upload.
      I am lazy I guess.

      • There is a cheap ipad air via optus

        • Thanks mate. I will look into it right away

My 8 year old daughter uses my 7th gen 10.2" ipad with Apple pencil for home schooling. She also does drawing and writing with and it does the job really well. If you are looking for something with good stylus support i can't see any reason to go for anything more expensive than a standard 7th gen iPad.

I also use it to record maths lessons for my high school classes. I record myself solving math problems with the Apple pencil and talking through them at the same time. It works a treat.

I got the same setup for my 6 year old daughter. The Logitech crayon stylus also works well but has no pressure sensitivity. Make sure you get the first gen apple pencil if you get 7th Gen iPad as the 2nd gen pencil doesn't work.

      • Thanks for the feedback guys. Really appreciate and I will go this way I guess then.

$1500 on a tablet for a 7 year old? Second hand Surface pro with a pen on gumtree will do the trick for 200 and I guarantee they won't know the difference.

    • You sure 200 gonna buy that? I never bought or even used a surface so no idea how does it even feel like?
Does the OS cover all the usual apps?
      Thanks for the suggestion.

      • Not sure what 'usual apps' you're referring to or looking for but Sketchup is free from Google and Windows has built in apps for drawing. Check around you on Gumtree or look at refurb units on ebay.

        • I meant usual apps for homework i.e. seesaw, study ladder etc.
Refurb is a good idea mate. Thanks

I don't think 200 can get you Surface pro anywhere.
but $1500 for 7 years old is overkill, I think.
with that budget, you can get Ipad Pro which is usually for professional designer.

      • Right said mate.
I started from pro and now planning 7th gen 10.5 once.

Since it's only basic drawing and he's so young maybe just get a iPad 7th gen and a quality basic stylus.

    I use this

However, if drawing is extremely important, you can't go wrong with the Apple Pencil 2.

  • Samsung Tab A

  • The Samsung S6 Lite has been announced today and may be a decent alternative to an iPad. At $549 for the 64gb Wifi version, which comes with an s-pen, it works out to be a fair bit cheaper than a 7th gen iPad with Apple Pencil.

    • worth a look. thanks mate.

  • Why Ipad Air? All new entry level ipads work with pens, screen size is now 10.5 I think… I have one for my two and pair it with Logitech crayon. Have both crayon and apple pencil and I find the crayon superior/ simpler for charging and for the kinds of use your kiddies need it for.

    • I assumed air bcos it was lower than pro which I was considering initially.

Yep, agree. Few kind people have mentioned that in comments above and i am finalizing ipad 7th gen for 518 + 1st gen pen for 145 from officeworks this sunday.

      Thanks alot mate

      • No worries, still recommend logitech crayon for kids, easier to hold and easier to recharge and pair. But cannot go wrong either way. :)

        • I would definitely check it out. Thanks for the advice mate.

        • ah..out of stock near me :(

Sounds like you're better off getting it with the cashrewards 7% cashback today rather than officeworks. (or even 6% tomorrow)
