Visual Studio Dev Essentials is free subscription for Microsoft software development tools and resources. Microsoft is offering this for some time, but I never seen it being posted on ozb? You get free developer tools like Visual Studio Community Edition (for Windows and Mac) and SQL Server Developer Edition (which you can also get some other way), Office Online, cloud services and free Azure credit, as well as a few online learning resources. This is extract from the current set of benefits:

Azure: Free account + $200 credit
Pluralsight: Free for 1 month
DataCamp: 2 month subscription
LinkedIn Learning: 1 month Premium subscription
CODE Magazine: 1 year digital subscription

Some benefits used to be better before (e.g. a few months longer subscriptions, more Azure credit) but current offer is still good. Note that you don’t need to activate all benefits at once – e.g. you can start with Pluralsight for a month, then learn something with DataCamp and then activate your Azure credit.

Still waiting my Az 900 exam voucher from them.

    • Did you get a mail as "Thank you for attending" ?

      • +1

        Yes I did.

        • me too, still waiting for the voucher though

  • wasn't it always free?

    • +5

Yes, since Microsoft introduced the Dev Essentials, though some benefits changed in time.

But it was never posted on ozb, and I reckon non-developers were missing out.

Various free training benefits are now quite handy to learn something during stay-home days.

  • Do we need to provide credit card details in order to start azure free subscription?

    • With my work email (ends in .edu.au) I didn't have to but with my personal one (gmail.com) I did. It says it's for "identification purposes" and that ":you will only be charged if you upgrade" for what it's worth…

      • Ah.. thats a bummer. Wondering what happens if I accidentally overuse some services in azure. Will i be billed?
