Kogan Rear Bike HD Camera with Light $29 (Was $129) + Delivery/Free with Kogan First @ Kogan

I have got this one on a newsletter from Kogan, not sure if this is a price error.

I haven't got myself one so can't comment on the quality. This looks like a cheap knockoff of the popular bike camera Cycliq Fly 6. Price seems pretty cheap either way.

Engineered for cyclists, this rear bike camera replaces your rear light to increase your visibility on the road and records what happens behind you in real-time for peace of mind.

If you were hoping to use this as a bike light i can't comment however I do have the aldi version. Video recording is average but can record close passes by cars and number plate to an extent. However the rear light is really good. It's wide angle so illuminates the ground, rear wheel quite well at night. Plenty bright.

I also pair it with a knog blinder - i know some people have issues with knog, but i've been using mine for 2 years (second hand) previous owner had it for about 1 year. I have no issues.

As mentioned above, Lezyne and Moon are also really good too, my friends uses them

I've tried cheap Aldi / Aliexpress lights to mid range ones like Lezyne / Moon / Knog and more expensive ones like Exposure and Light and motion etc.

I do recommend going with a Exposure TraceR front and rear USB chargeable lights. Price is a bit high but they are top quality stuff and very bright even in heavy rain /fog. I've had mine for 5+ years and still going strong. One of my rear lights fell off and was run over by a few utes AND a semi. I waited for them to pass and picked it up and still working till this day and still holds charge. The one piece aluminium body is tough as.

    • Bicycle Network do an annual light review about this time each year:

    • I use Magicshine front and back. Super Bright rechargeable. They used to be pretty cheap but now approach the same price as the name brands. There are knock offs and they are still pretty cheap and generic replacement battery packs are OK too.

    • I've got the front light from Aldi and two rear lights (one on the seatpost and one on the right seat stay).

I can recommend the Fabric Lumasense Brake Light. It acts like a brake light. Can be purchased from Wiggle for $32.

Dick Smith / Kogan are selling it on eBay too, works out cheaper if you don't have Kogan First to purchase the same item on ebay from them for $32.99 including FREE Postage.

    • Thanks champ!

      • No problemo!

    • HAHA, love the photo on that ad, should have the caption (camera not to scale). Light/camera on the picture of the guy riding a bike is about the size of a mobile phone, either that or the rider is in an under 10's race.

  • This isn't dissimilar to the Aldi one selling a while back for $40 odd (or less discounted). Hard to believe it was ever worth $130

The problem with these cheap cameras is that they lack image stabilisation.
This leads to very unusable footage of you're riding on anything but the smoothest roads.

You'll be able to make out the colour and type of car (sedan/SUV), but maybe not the plates and make and model of it.

  • Can this be used on motorcycle? We already have gopro helmet cam for front but something recording the rear would be nice

    • Yes. Suggest using the mount to attach it to the rear indicators or pillion foot pegs

Amazed they can get away with this. I have one of the original Fly 6's and it looks like this. I also have one of the newer Fly 6 models. I just want a rear light and something the cops can use to catch whoever squashed me. Dont think I ever looked at the videos, literally just there in case I ever needed to go back and review an accident etc. Problem i have had was the fitting/attachments. Cycliq use a velcro strap attachment and i have an aero seat-post. Not a great setup. i have bought an expensive adapter thingo from shapeworks in the US to modify the rear light attachment point on my Trek Madone to connect the Fly 6.

    • Oh man, I would love a Madone. Very jealous.

I have heard that complaint about the Cycliq models. Plenty of reviews saying that the mount was destroyed very quickly.

  • I'm having the same thoughts using it as a rear camera for a motorcycle, I don't see why not.
However it will be a pain to take on and off all the time and it is quite chunky..

    • I leave my cam on the bike. It's so crap and cheap no one steals it.
I commute daily (before covid19) and Park the bike in public on the footpath.

$29.99 Men round up, women round down :)

def can upload from the web with a video file made with any program. Cycliq stopped the functionality where you can transfer files from the app to online- now you have to use a micro SD card compatible reader. Much faster that way, to be fair.

I received this and after a quick play im happy with it for only $30 (although yet to test it on the road). Does anyone know how to change the date/time? Mine is 2 hours out, but the manual has no mention on how to adjust.

Also, is it possible to upgrade the firmware?

    • I have Cycliq 6 (older version) for which I paid around $200. In the SD card, there is a text file where you can update the time. Maybe there is a similar way to change the date in the Kogan one also.

      • I checked, there is no text file, only a log file.

Oh well, i guess I’ll just have to live with incorrect time.

    • What's the process for getting it to turn on and stay on? Mine just makes a few noises, followed by 5 blips and off it goes?

I've tried with an SD and without. And fully charging it. No luck

      • It needs to have an SD card or it won’t stay on. Make sure your card isn’t faulty and it’s inserted correctly. Possibly try a different card too.

        • Yep, awesome! Picked up a 64GB one from Bing Lee on Saturday and it works a treat!

Would love to change the time on the timestamp but I mainly bought the unit for a brighter rear light. Having a camera built in is just a bonus.

    • Mine seems to be out by randomly 10mins or so lol.

Mine arrived yesterday and I took it out for a spin today. Here's a few points of feedback

    Pros:

    • Reasonable camera quality (used at dusk and later in the evening when it was completely dark).

    • Price (as you all know)

    • Light is quite bright. I also like the different functions it has.

    • Easy to set up and use out of the box

    Cons:

    • Time is around 2:15(ish) off current time. No way to change this as the device has no UI. I have tried setting it using .txt files on the SD card itself, but it doesn't change. The SD card removes the file as if it has set the time correctly, but does not actually change timestamp.

    • Although camera quality was reasonable, picking up numberplates was a bit hit and miss. It really depended on the angle of approach. This may have also been related to the time of day I went out, as low light/darkness can be hard for a lot of dashcam type devices.

    • Locks lots of files from bumps in the road. Not a huge deal, just need to clear out regularly. May run out on longer rides, but I'm not sure.

    • BIGGEST CON - the mount. The mount is truly awful. It sticks out a long way from wherever you attach it. There is nowhere I can put it on my bike without my legs hitting it in my pedal stroke. The mount holds the camera secure, but is just really, really poorly designed. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to place it except my seatpost. There is nowhere that I can get it out of the way. I have tried turning the screws around and putting it in all different positions. No luck.

If anyone has a solution for the mount or for the timestamping, please let me know. If these two things could be fixed, it could actually be a really reasonable camera, especially for what I paid.

    • +1

Great feedback. I am not sure if it's possible but my Cycliq Fly6 (old) has got a Velcro strap. You might want to try if it's possible to attach it to your seatpost with a Velcro strap?

      • It seems like the camera itself has a GoPro style mount, I don't own a GoPro but it looks similar from my memory. Is that the same way that the Fly attaches? I might be able to make use of something like that. The real bummer is that the mount attaches the bracket so securely, the bolts just stick out WAY too far.

Anyway, if I can find a solution to the mount I'll be pretty happy with this purchase. The timestamp issue is still a pretty large concern. If I was ever unfortunate enough to have to use the footage, it would be practically unusable because it's not the correct time.

        • +1

I am pretty sure there is away to change the time. Even in the Cycliq fly6 I find it a bit hard to change the time sometimes.

This is the manual for Cycliq Fly6. Hope this might help you with the setting the time.

          • @dealspider: Thanks for sharing this. I tried a couple of other different variations of this and then also this exact method. Unfortunately they didn't work. Hopefully I can get a response from Kogan Support on how to fix this.

            • +1

@CBrads4: There is a user manual that you can download on the Product page. But there seems to be nothing mentioned about how to set the time :(

              • +1

@dealspider: Yeah, bit of a bummer. Overall, I like the product. I've managed to temporarily modify the mount so it is out of the way. I'll test that out again tonight. Happy with it for the price I paid, hopefully they can help me with the time.

It's still a great deal and I'm happy I bought it.

@CBrads4: Glad you liked it. Hope you get the time fixed.
