Kogan SmarterHome Wireless Garage Door Opener - Anyone Know How Well This Works?

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-wireless-gara…

I'm interested in a wifi connected garage door solution and this is currently available for $70 with Kogan First - but I'm unsure how reliable this would be given it's through Kogan. Does anyone have any experience with these and whether they work well?

  • Does anyone have any experience with these and whether they work well?

Kogans smart home range are just tuya products with the kogan name, so they'll work well.

This one has a sensor on it, so does your door rise and turn 90 degrees as it opens, as this won't work with roller doors.

  • Looking at my Avanti garage door, this looks suitable. Very tempting….

I am more interested in this product due to its camera feature.. check it out.

    • Wow, $180!!

      • Its $180 US!
        Its AU$281.70

          DOUBLE WOW!

    • Looks like a great idea but would it work with Google assistant?
That would be the selling point for me..

      • In the above link just below Add to Cart it has Works with the Google Assistant.

        • Thanks, now that I'm on a PC I'll have a closer look see..

    • If you're going to spend that kind of money have a look at these that you have the import from USD as well https://www.ryobitools.com/power-tools/products/garage-door-…

  • looks like it's not compatible the rolled type one?

    • There’s a sensor that gets attached to the door, would get smashed up

      • would get smashed up

Not really, you could put it at the bottom and it wouldn't get smashed up, but this sensor detects the door state be tipping the sensor over on its side to detect the door is open still.

slightly cheaper but different product at amazon

  • Would like to see a pic of it installed, are there power cables going everywhere?

Can IFTTT detect when phone goes on and off wifi to trigger it?

    • No but in Smart Life you can use geo location to trigger an automation. Still in Beta though. Smart Life is ending support for IFTTT in May.

  • Did u end up buying this from Kogan. If yes any reviews?

    • Nah I'm unsure whether my garage door is compatible yet. Haven't moved into the house but it's an Avanti brand apparently.

Will try in a few months but may be other types out there to research.

      • I am thinking to buy as well. But looks like the price has gone up. Now shows $99.99 with Kogan First.

    Hi Guys,

I tried the more expensive alcidae garager2, which I purchased off eBay and both units I got where dead out of the box, flashing red light that never went solid so I was unable to start the connection process to my network. They had great customer service, but could not find the issue so they refunded me for both units.
So after failing to units from Alcidae, I wasn't keen to purchase a third and wait another month for it to arrive.
I saw the Kogan unit and thought why not for $69 bucks at the time. Kogan put there prices up and down all the time, wait a week and things can drop by $100 bucks or as I see it back to the correct price.
Kogan unit was a pain to get on the WiFi network as you had to work out what it was trying to do via some Ramin flashing lights on the unit, but after 30 mins it connected using the basic method, I think it was called.
I wired it into my Avanti sectional door opener motor, super easy just download the manual and look at the wiring diagram and wire it into the wall switch terminals.
Then to my surprise I hit the open button on app and it bloody opened.
I've added it to my Google home up and now I can also control it from my voice as well.
It's been up for a month now and it's not gone off the network at all, it's been so stable that I'm even leaving the house without my remote, just using my wear os watch to open it via Google assistant.
Plus one thing that's not in the manual, if you leave the door open for ten minutes, it sends you a second message to say it's still open, found that last week when I was mowing the lawn and it buzzed on my watch, now that cool.
You can also install it on multiple devices, so I put it on my wife's phone too.

So I can say it's great for the money, it just would love the Kogan app to have geofencing so it could open as I got home, but I'm sure I can find another app that can do this, can you guys recommend one?

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Brett

    • can you change the duration of the 10min notification if garage door is left open. I prefer to get a notification after say 3-5min or so.

  • Saw the following deal (Wofea WiFi Switch Smart Garage Door Opener Controller) at AliExpress for A$24.10.

    • Thanks. Going to give this one a go

      • Installed, took a bit of tinkering but works with Homebridge

Set your wifi to 2.4 and connect device https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrKM3TrSOpA

For Homebridge, needed to set static IP in router as it was having discovery issues:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq0JL_wicKg -> Read comments, grant all the permissions and you will get the id and key
        And install this plugin: https://github.com/iRayanKhan/homebridge-tuya
